Love Drop - Don't Look Back (Dan Shake's Dancefloor Dub Mix)- CLIP

The Working Elite are Berlin-based spark plugs Thomas “Saap” Sabrowsky, of Extra Producktion, Terre des Pommes, ex-marine soldier, seasoned cook and barkeeper; and Daniel "D´LonelyAl" Nentwig, who co-directs Extra Produktionen, plays keyboard and electric bass for various outfits, and engineers at Berlin’s Butterama Recording Center. Suffice it to say, the pair have named their collaborative project suitably. The Working Elite create recreational music for dancers to shimmer through the days and nights of balmy season.


Following a killer acid-piano house 12” and contributing a Test Pressing-certified new-disco chug to a split release with Tuff City Kids (both) on Terre des Pommes in 2014, The Working Elite further refine their ability to soundtrack festivities with Rockman / Born Again. “Rockman” conveys an understatedly cinematic mood with repeated imitation string cycles over crisp electro foundations.

You know him from Studio Barnhus. He released his album on Axel Boman's label last year and a couple of hot tracks with longtime partner Mr. Tophat before that.

His first EP for Toy Tonics features 3 of the sweetest bangers he did till now. What a wonderful vibe! And the remix... Killer. By Stockholm’s amazing newcomers Mount Liberation Unlimited (who just released an EP on Permanent Vacation).

Art Alfie is busy these days: besides his involvement with Toy Tonics he started an own label (Velvet Pony). ​Even if you might know him mainly from the kick-ass dancefloor stuff he has been doing with Karlovak and the Studio Barnhus gang - there is some more complex background here: Alfie used to play in hardcore and psychedelic bands and has a real golden hand when it comes to work with musicians. In fact currently he is also producing some stuff for Swedish supergroup/hotshot band ‚Off The Meds‘!

The third and final instalment in Frits' 'Two Bar House Music & Chord Stuff' sees him continue to showcase his distinct style of lo-fi, wonky house - both quirky & unconventional, yet instantly endearing in the same breath. 

Served up first in Frits' melting pot, 'Theme 09' kicks things off with a shuffling, UKG esque rhythm and RnB flexed vocal snippets, alongside floaty arps and that 'chord stuff' that swells and stabs in the mix. Throw in a weighty bass and Frits' trademark analogue wonkiness and you've got a prime example of a Wentink wobbler. Next up, 'Theme 10' hits you with an organ melody reminiscent of a warped Crystal Waters, before twisting and turning into an edgy off-kilter house track. A glitchy synth line, bouncing bass and dreamy pads will hook you till the end.

Flip it and 'Theme 11' offers up a chuggier affair where glistening arps are interspersed with squelchy and sustained synths. Elements and effects are combined throughout, mesmerising you with a glimpse into the wonky world of the Frits'. Closing it out Wentink leaves you with a quirky club stomper, coupling a gritty bassline, saturated loops and off kilter, lo-fi stabs all tied together with a driving kick. 

Across this 3-part series Frits' has left the fancy titles at the door, letting the music do the talking and demonstrating his penchant for making interesting, engaging and distinctive house music…. not your average two bar house music and chord stuff.

Frits Wentink - Theme 10

Public Release maintains its coast-switching lifestyle with what is perhaps its most ambitious project—and inarguably its longest —yet, Earth Boys’ debut full-length, The eboys LP, the logical conclusion to a chain of collaborations that began, a little over a year ago, with the release of their Trail Mix EP. The two-disc, twelve-track album represents a new high for the pair comprised of Michael Sherburn and Julian C. Duron both creatively and technically; ideas they’ve been stewing and simmering since their splash of a debut in 2015 are now presented fully baked here.
Eboys was conceived as a classic long-player, with the majority of the tunes having a runtime of about four minutes and the whole thing feeling most satisfying when inhaled with one big tug that gets you from the A1 all the way to the D3. It begins with “The Intro,” a sort of manifesto for what’s to come: here, we find Earth Boys sitting, a little wine drunk, at the piano, attempting a slick jazz lick that sits atop shuffling breaks and is completed with a free-wheeling sax soliloquy, courtesy of local friend Jeff Hackworth. Think of it as Sherburn and Duron’s title credits sequence à la Saturday Night Live. Then it's a splash of water across the face and onward to business with "Roll it Back," a flexy, laconic warmup workout that sets the tempo and pace for the party unfolding. The rest of the first side is a woozy, pads-and-vox-drenched crisscross through deep house tropes that unhurriedly tumbles into the B-side, a slinky, sharper-focused movement that begins with the G-funk-dusted “Bossa Nova Gang,” an homage to Bossa Nova Civic Club, the Bushwick dance-music incubator that the boys came up in and around.
With the next disc, Earth Boys nudge the tempo up a smidge and get a little punchier, first with “Come Thru,” an elliptical party jam with a fat, bouncy bass, then even more so with “Blue Iris,” a ravey anthem illuminated by black lights and lasers. The journey begins to come down with “Last Call,” a slo-mo wobble to the bar for one last shot of a perk-me-up, and then folds back into itself with “The Outro,” a chill-out finale that burns the remainder of the journey down to a sticky resin.

One of the standout tracks from Joey Negro’s Produced With Love album and a firm favourite of Gilles Peterson, "Distorting Space Time" gets the full remix treatment.

Kicking it off is Chicago legend Ron Trent, who provides his own take on the original funked out, Arthur Russell flavour, moving it into deeper, more housed up territory.

Fouk bring their hazy, jazz tinged style building the remix around those warm Rhodes chords, shuffling rhythm and low pulsating bassline. 

Joey Negro adds his own new Space Funk remix featuring Kaidi Tatham on keys which is a deep, jazzy broken beat groove with extra vocoder solo from Sunburst regular Tony Remy.

Marie Davidson - 'So Right (John Talabot Pressure Dub Remix)'

The keeping of pets marks humans’ attempt at taking possession of a part of reality that is not at his disposal. Dressing a piece of the real that lives according to entirely non-human rules and which only in the saddest case does not resist the discipline of the human symbolic order vehemently and in a sustained matter, is a violent act of protection. Because in the non-place of the real, all that which we are helpless in the face of looms: the non-logical and the nameless, the violence and the noise, yet also the unrestrained and unfiltered desire.
The innocuous figure of the pet marks a gateway to an investigation of these eerie milieus, while electronic dance music lends itself to this investigation in an outstanding way. This constellation marks the subject of Column’s ‘Pets II.’ 

Column is the name of Cologne based renaissance man Jan Philipp Janzen, who, as chief emissary of Cologne’s pop internationalism, has been playing the field in various functions for Von Spar, Cologne Tapes, Urlaub in Polen, Owen Pallett, Scout Niblett or The Field, and who has also, in one way or another, been involved in most relevant records coming out of Cologne for the past number of years. After his
excellent solo debut ‘Pets I’ (Areal, 2016), Janzen presents another extraordinary record in ‘Pets II,’ perfectly complemented by another ghostly oil work of Burkhard Moennich on the cover.
Sonically, ‘Pets II’ marks a clear development for Column. In its exploration of the thresholds of the real, it sets two points of focus, corresponding with the split in sides A and B. Side A, on which Janzen teams up with long-time friend myr. (PNN), explores the uncanny as a fissure of the symbolic order, and the subsequent breaking in of the real. It opens with two peaktime rockets that have their wooden, nether-regional groove narrated by grim, down-pitched vocals. The ethereal remix by Leibniz (hundert) seems to be observing the situation from a hiding place, and is the side’s clandestine and no less dark closer. Side B, for which Janzen invited studiomate Marvin Horsch (Dorfjungs/Beats in Space) along, delivers two swaying synthesizer workouts, the second of which, “Molly and Swerve,” is directed firmly at the dancefloor again. What is at stake here is the transition between a free, undirected jouissance of the real and a more ordered becoming-lust. Here, as in
Map.ache’s (Kann/Giegling/Altin Village) remix which closes out ‘Pets II,’ it becomes clear what connections dance music can foster between a free, impersonal desire and the sphere of interpersonal wanting, but also the losses that are negotiated in it.

Above all, however, it becomes evident what a courageous daring project ‘Pets II’ is in all of its conceptual and aesthetic determination; with Von Spar’s standout ‘Garzweiler’ 12” (Altin Village & Mine, 2017), it documents a New Cologne Realism.
