‘Curious Thing’, the first single from Ned Collette’s forthcoming album Mixed Light, is probably the most straight-shooting love song of his whole catalogue, but who is he aiming at? There are hints: someone real, lost, now just a ghost, or “the world we’ve both outgrown” itself, or perhaps most simply, the tender muse. Within, fragile sentiments align with a depth of field where songwriting meets dusty, green-sleeved R&B. “I’ve seen the world in the slipstream of a dare, and that’s what scares me the most.”

Singing with him throughout is his now regular collaborator Leah Senior, who in an instance of temporal poetry has her wonderful new album Pt. Roadknight out the day ‘Curious Thing’ is released. Ned says: “every time Leah sings on one of my songs a new character is created who spins around the meaning and relation of the characters. I never intend this, but am slowly coming to expect it – it’s like writing a two-hander dialogue but you know someone brilliant is going to take care of the other half. Every time I send something to her I can’t wait to see who and what comes back”

The album Mixed Light itself features Collette’s usual variety of quality contributors—some old-hands, some new, and perhaps surprising, additions to the clan. After the more band-in-a-room scenario of 2024’s Our Other History, it is a return to the sculptural nature of his 2018 masterpiece Old Chestnut. The hand-collaged artwork by renown also-Berliner-via-Melbourne artist Lucy Dyson reflects this.

The seeming serenity of ‘Curious Thing’ should not fool you though—over the remaining 40-odd minutes, a core of straighter songs recorded last year with the original Wirewalker (Joe Talia, Ben Bourke) by Dan Luscombe in Melbourne, are somehow weaved into a cosmic tapestry of diverse instrumentals and—harking back to Collette’s very early roots—a couple of almost free-jazz-like workouts. Those familiar with the vernacular and unexpected muscle of the Wirewalker shows of old might even call this his guitar album.

Still Vivid

A journey through percussion, exploring the different ways rhythm can take shape through matter, texture and movement. 

I didn’t want to be tied to a specific style. Instead, I wanted to follow the way percussion changes throughout the hour — moving from heavier, more driving passages into slower and more spacious moments, then back again. An ongoing series of ebbs and flows, with the percussion itself becoming the thread connecting everything. 🪘🥁

For this mix, I found myself drawing from different corners of deep techno, leftfield and percussive electronics, without trying to keep them separated. The focus was more on how different rhythmic languages can coexist, shift and transform as the journey unfolds. 🤍

After a bit of a quiet period, we’re gearing up for a busy couple/few years and what better way to kick that off than to cover one of the most iconic, important Canadian bands of all time - Eric’s Trip and their song, Follow. And what better way to rip that song than to have our old friend Jeans Boots singing with us!

To say Eric’s Trip and their various members' bands made an impact on me would be a massive understatement. There may not be a more important and more loved Canadian band for us than Eric’s Trip. They blew my teenaged mind and opened up an amazing world of lo-fi, noisey, but tuneful music for me. Inspiring quiet mornings listening to gems like Behind the Garage and Allergic to Love, road trips listening to Forever Again straight through, late nights blasting ragers like Follow, Anytime You Want and Sunlight and many, many hours letting my guitar feedback swell into the perfect lo-fi My Bloody Valentine moments that filled Eric’s Trip records.

Julie, Rick, Chris and Mark, thank you for every second of music you’ve given us. May it continue to inspire scrappy young bands to blow out their ears in basements and clubs for years to come.

This Montreal four-piece was formed in 2019 by members of Room Control, Repo, Scene Noir & Citylake. Richard Bunze (guitar), Kevin Hills (bass), Martin Saint (voice, guitar) & Dan Stefik (drums) crafted a sound based on hooks, a pulsating rhythm section, textural guitars & baritone vocals. The band traces its roots to the moody side of new-wave, psych & British indie.
