I took this cloud photo last week whilst sitting on the beach in the early morning attempting to gather my thoughts, just before work. I had just captured a field recording of the sea when I noticed this cloud looming above the cliff edge, so I’ve chucked that in here too for good measure. 

I wanted to somewhat try to capture the mood I was in when I noticed the cloud. 

In response to the prompt I used:

Probability gate on a Kontakt Irish Harp freebie VST I picked up recently which I'd been curious to try out and the prompt seemed as good a time to do so as any. I don't normally used sampled instruments much but this one was quite fun to work with. The multiple probability gates helped to make the rendered image to MIDI data less dense and more listenable to:

Disquiet Junto Project 0604: Heaven’s Gate
The Assignment: Use a picture of the clouds as a plan for adjusting your sound.

Step 1: Think about the use of a gate in music production. A gate can be described as an “on/off switch, allowing signals over threshold to pass while muting everything below.” (It’s likely that discussion will occur during this project regarding useful explanations of the concept.)

Step 2: Take a picture of some clouds.

Step 3: Think of how to interpret the clouds as a model of a gate.

Step 4: Record a track employing the approach you determined in Step 3 using the picture from Step 2.

I took the cover photo in Ashland, Oregon, earlier this year; no filters were employed. Regarding the title, I’m a Michael Cimino admirer.

Cumuliform disquiet0604

This track was inspired by the Disquiet Junto Project 0604 (details see below): 
My track https://soundcloud.com/rabmusiclab/parsimony was remixed by implementing gates on the different instruments. For each instrument a line was drawn on the cover-photo, and the opening and closing of the gates was determined by the colours of the clouds along the line. 

Since the original track was called parsimony (as a result of Ockham's razor), the title of this track was quickly determined.

Ockham's Cloud Gates (Disquiet0604)

Disquiet Junto Project 0604: Heaven’s Gate

I divided the screen into 5 parts.
Each part is linked to an instrument channel.
Every time a cloud enters or leaves one of the 5 areas it activates a trigger/gate.

1)	Guzheng/Percussion kit
2)	Harp Harmonic - wood
3)	Prepared Kalimba
4) 	Percussion kit 2
5)	Contrabass col legno

As sound binder I used a loop generated by Reaktor (TG-8H Live by Rick Scott)

The track is a very mechanical walk, created by generative sequencers. The sounds, as in recent times, are percussive / acoustic.
Ergo very short sound envelope in order not to saturate ears and acoustic field.

For this week's @disquiet challenge I returned to the use of field recordings that I'd mash together to create sound-based pieces when I got back into creative practice during lockdown in 2020. I was recording bird song this weekend, and by accident I'd switched the Zoom recorder on in my pocket when I got back to @kate-gallaher's house, so there's a speeded up version of me going through the door and making coffee that runs throughout all echoed up. I've taken fragments of @stellato-strings trying the looping machine alongside some of the bird and stream sounds I had taken that morning. So the piece becomes like entering a 5D portal of exterior and interior worlds, mixing up how I started making artworks and blending this with the editing composition practice I started developing first using Audacity, and now on Logic with all the big spangly effects 'n fings.

For my response to the disquiet brief, the two musical influences behind this track are David Sylvian - here referred to through elements of the amazing 'Ghosts' by his band, Japan, in the 1980s - and Brian Eno - through the use of extended, ambient, structures and the use of chance.
