Planet I'm Gone - 05 The Last Drag

I don’t really do covers. 

Up until now the only cover I have ever recorded was ‘John The Revelator’ and even that is just a take on a standard. 

Anyway, ‘The Idiot’ by Iggy Pop (and let’s face it, David Bowie) is in my top 5 favourite albums of all time. Depending on my mood it can even be No.1. It is cold, detached, evocative and completely unrepresentative of anything Iggy ever did before or after. Although my favorite song is easily ‘Mass Production’ this is a cover of one of the most well known tracks off the album, ‘Nightclubbing’.  

My version is a mess. It goes out of time, out of tune, it has disinterested singing and some  scuzzed up production. It probably suits the boozed out nocturnal nature of the song to some extent. 

It came about a few months back when I was zombie watching TV and by chance hit on a cool way of playing the song on my acoustic guitar. I then just hit record and bashed it out. I also added a bit of record crackle to it for a bit of ambience.

I wanted to get a bit of a bluesy funeral procession vibe. You know, that kind of blues where they beat the big bass drum.

So come and join me for a boozed out, blurred blues as we stumble home through neon streets after a night of living dead debauchery.

I read about the sharecroppers of the Mississippi Delta and how they were took advantage of their workers, holding them accountable for the supposed 'debt' of the farm. 

Many chose to cut their losses and head north to the likes of Detroit and Chicago and those that could play the blues also had a possible ticket to a better financial future and even some fame. 

Muddy Waters was one such hopeful, as was BB King as were many other familiar names. 

This is a story about their journey and borrows heavily from the delta blues style but with a modern twist.
