We know from I Corinthians that Paul has grown tired and weary.  In the vision here, God encourages Paul in his weariness.  The promise given is the same throughout Scripture:  I will be with you.  When we follow Jesus and are sent by Jesus, we will inevitably come against opposition.  In the midst of this God is with us.

In a culture where people are more prone to listen to music on their own with airpods on, it is rare to hear people sing aloud together or recite something together unless alcohol is involved or there is some sort of strange cultic practice involved.  And yet, when we gather we sing and we read psalms together and to one another.  Why?  Joyful singing, praise, and thanksgiving is an outpouring of the Spirit.  We encourage and strengthen one another in song, and confirm with one another what is true about God.

As the church we are God’s choice, holy and loved.  Paul exhorts us to put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.  A specific expression of these characteristics is through forgiving one another.  This is how we love and continue to work towards unity.

As this passage shows, true believers' unity can provide a powerful and appealing witness to the world. It reveals the redeeming and reconciling power of Jesus. It shows that relationships can withstand the disappointments and pains of daily life. Unity also enables the body of believers to resist the pressures of the world, to care for those in need, and to take the gospel to the whole world. Living with humility, gentleness, and patience is hard… but why?

There are 3 phases of Renewal in this passage. 
* Bones come together, flesh appears.  Still no breath.  (alive but no transformative power)

*Breath of life comes into dead bodies and they come to life and stand up (new life in Christ)

*”Our hope is perished.  we are finished.”  God makes his promise to plant them on fertile land. (purpose)

Perhaps we can see these 3 stages as Jesus’ 3 days in the tomb before resurrection.

One of the modernist, Western lenses by which Scripture has been interpreted in the American Church is that of radical individualism.  The word “Oori” in Korean means “we,” and is used more often within a collectivist/group mindset.  We should consider that many of the cultures from within which the Scriptures were written were more collectivist than they are individualist.  What does this mean for our reading of Scripture and our living out as the church?

To preach Jesus is to preach healing.
Only Luke records the healing of Malchus’ (ref. John) ear.  In a situation where violence could rule the day and evil would “have its hour”  Jesus would perform a miraculous healing and restoration on a rather seemingly insignificant body part.  But this ‘little’ healing truly highlights the contrast of Kingdoms.  Jesus in his incarceration chooses non-violence and even loving touch, when vengeance could easily have won the day.  This is who we proclaim and worship!

Jesus heals a man who had been ill for 38 years at the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. Unable to reach the healing waters, the man explains his situation to Jesus. Jesus tells him, “Get up, pick up your mat and walk.” The man obeys and is immediately healed.  What is the interplay between faith, grace, and effort in this healing?  What does it look like for us to pick up our mats and walk when we haven't been able to before?  What does it mean to "want to be healed?"

We are given a few episodes of Jesus very willing to cross the boundaries and propriety to heal people very intimately and with authority.  As the prophet Isaiah wrote:  Jesus takes ups our infirmities and heals our disease.”. He’s willing able and chases us down and holds us in our uncleanness.

In chapters 8 and 9 JEsus goe on a whirlwind tour of healing.  In Matthew 9:37-38 Jesus sees the many people seeking healing and has compassion on them “for they were like a sheep without a shepherd.”  Then he looks to his disciples and points their attention to the harvest before them saying:  “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”  We are invited to participate in Christ’s healing work in the world.  When the need seems overwhelming and immense–Jesus tells us to prayer for more people to help out.

Jesus raises a widows son from the dead.  From a terminal situation, Jesus’ heart goes out to a devastated mother and demonstrates that He is the Lord of the Resurrection.

In the center of Mark, Jesus touches a blind man who initially cannot see clearly but then can.  The disciples earlier do not ‘see’ the meaning behind the loaves and the fish. Paul writes while in prison in Rome.  He calls the Philippians to rejoice in all circumstances.  What does it look like to rejoice even in pain and suffering?  What is the relationship between Joy and suffering?  As we journey in this Advent season, we recognize that all is not shiny lights and happiness in this season.  We recognize that for many, Christmas time is a sad time.  We also recognize that our world is hurting and groaning.  What does it look like for the community of faith to be of one mind and spirit and to Rejoice at all times?

Continue to share the Good News of What Jesus is doing!
