e l e u t h e r o m a n i a was selected as one of three finalists for the Lewis Eady Steinway Spirio Record Composition Competition. The idea to write a work for the Steinway recordable piano and have it be performed at the Lewis Eady Piano Showroom in Remuera.

e l e u t h e r o m a n i a is an intense desire for freedom, and can almost be seen as a disorder. The obsession can seem irrational, manic, and out of control, as the urge for something that seems so out of reach can lead to a state of despair, irregular behaviour, and confusion. Dreaming of another world tinged by the rose coloured glasses that are unable to be taken off as it seems to be a better alternative to reality. 🌹

0:00 - 1:50 spiralling out of control, developing the intense urge to break free and run away from everything.
1:52 - 2:24 Steinway Solo big cluster chord moment. Editing done on the ipad, although it is a bit hard to see the effect. If you look closely in on the keys, there are things happening all over! (see Youtube link for video)
2:24 - 3:40 transition part leaving the messy first part/beginning and have found a strange calmness in oneself. Fully embracing and giving in to the romanticizing. I imagine this part, where one is lying down on the grass looking up at the sky and being content daydreaming.
3:42 - 5:32 'Lullaby' part inspired by me picking up the violin again and playing around with a piece I once had to give a solo performance on ages ago and made it the outro/ending for e l e u t h e r o m a n i a.

Chipper is the first piece/track out of the 3 part composition I wrote for brass trio including trumpet, horn and trombone. I wanted this piece to be a light, fun and cute introduction.

I found this in my archives of all the compositions I wrote at uni. So after digging this one up and re-editing it a bit, I wanted to share it alongside the next 2 parts/tracks that follow it.

This was written/handed in as an assignment under 'Short Project 4' on 08/06/2018 in my 2nd year 1st semester of composition (Mus 210).

Chipper

Cape is the second piece/track out of the 3 part composition I wrote for brass trio including trumpet, horn and trombone. I wanted this piece to be a heroic, solid transition. Not all heroes wear capes but if they did, this would be playing in the background ;)

Cape

Charisma is the last piece/track out of the 3 part composition I wrote for brass trio including trumpet, horn and trombone. I wanted this piece to be a head bopping spicy ending as the melody is really catchy to me ;P

Charisma

Chipper, Cape and Charisma in this 3 part composition brass trio for Trumpet in Bb, Horn in F, and Tenor Trombone. Just like the powerpuff girls, each track represents a character. Chipper like Bubbles, Cape like Blossom, and Charisma like Buttercup.

Found in my university composition archives and wanted to share it among the others which have been hidden in the vault.

Re-arrangement for Variation on a Theme by Robert Schumann, Op.20: Variation III

Incognito was premiered at the 7th Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music on September 7th 2019.

Inspired by the meaning behind the word which appealed to me including private, concealed, in disguise and going undercover. This work aims to go incognito through the initial set up of material, allowing familiarity to take place. Then, slowly through the progression of the work, small events begin to off-set the pulse, regularity, pitch and the look of the sounds from playing to mime playing.

Requirement: Imagination will have to take place in visualizing the mime playing as I do not have video footage of the performance :(

I am grateful for my composition lecturer David Chisholm, who is also the founding artistic director of BIFEM for having me be part of the festival alongside my og comp bud Olí. It was a great experience for me working with the performers, attending the festival and meeting my composition peers from around NZ who also took part.

Just me messing around with the editing of the audio file by having the doubled track slightly out of sync for repeated rhythms but it's not a huge difference to the original.

Defining Exit After The Hour

D E A T H was selected as part of the APO Our Voices workshop and recorded at the Auckland Philharmonia Hall on August 23rd 2019.

Initially the title was only temporary as I wanted a clear file name that was easy to locate in my folder for tutorials. I intended to name it something else but was encouraged to keep it, in caps lock and s p a c e d out.

The theme and idea for this composition was based on circumstances around dying, dealing with dead bodies, death itself, burial and rituals that surround it. Death is unsettling and something that is familiar yet unknown to us at the same time.

D E A T H

Orca was commissioned in November 2019 by BaDaBoom Ltd and is one of the pieces in their 2020 show.

BaDaBoom Ltd managed by Jess Hix is a company that works to cultivate an appreciation and love for music through a captivating show of percussion and movement with the use of unconventional instruments. The main instruments being bass pipes, straight pipes and bottle glasses as well as a variety of other instruments used in the other pieces.

The show that is being developed includes an all female percussion trio performing on large scale instruments made from recycled materials; reinforcing the idea that music can be accessible to everyone.

The music supports the story based on ocean life and sustainability following Chinese dragon style puppets also made out of recycled materials. The show is aimed towards entertaining and educating primary and secondary school students on the wonders of the ocean and how we can protect it.

The hero of the story is the orca family, specifically the main orca is the young orca in the pod. The playful style of music reinforces the curiosity the young orca has for the ocean life.
