Drum & bass stalwarts Black Sun Empire are to follow up a trio of recent EPs from The Upbeats, Neonlight and Pythius with the release of ‘Until The World Ends’ - a five-track, collaborative EP with NZ duo State Of Mind. To be released on January 26th via their genre-defining Blackout imprint, it marks an exciting start to 2015.

Lead track ‘Ego’ immediately sets the tone with growling bass lines and punchy synth-stabs that underpin dark, techy atmospherics and vocal loops.

Second track ‘Until The World Ends’ proves once again both acts’ enduring versatility - kicking off with a bass-heavy dubstep tones complimented by vocal duties from State Of Mind’s fellow New Zealander PNC, before

switching to a manic, intelligently structured groove for the remainder.

‘Bad’ opens with progressive percussion and softly-worked synths that move euphorically to a pounding drum break, whilst fourth track ‘Jack Nicholson’, featuring an imitable sample of the man himself, is a bass-fuelled shockwave of a track. Final track.

‘Moonbox’ closes the EP in true Blackout fashion, with signature frenetic beats and firing drums rounding off proceedings in style.

Black Sun Empire have built a reputation for curating their own brand of dark, neurofunk-inspired drum & bass over the past 12 months and this collaboration with long term accomplices State Of Mind - whom released their latest album ‘Eat The Rich’ via the label earlier this year - feeds into the hype surrounding Blackout as the label looks ahead to 2015.

Having made his Ram debut in 2006, it’s been an exciting half-decade for James Pountney. While ‘The Bypass’ smashed onto dance floors and into DJs’ record boxes as part of Ram’s ‘Dimensions’ series Culture Shock was instantaneously secured as a name to watch.

Several collaborations with Brookes Brothers, a succession of smashing solo hits and an outstanding remix for Nero’s chart smash ‘Guilt’ later and Culture Shock continues to amaze anyone with a keen ear for beautifully produced and effortlessly unpretentious D&amp;B. Infused with progressive electro-house influences and steeped in gentle melodies that stick in your head, Culture Shock is a master of balancing dance floor friendly production and magnificently simple musical elements.

Proving that statement true on the A side of the latest Ram single is ‘Protection’ is an effortlessly beautiful track that takes Culture Shock trademarks to the next level. Slowly evolving and changing throughout, this tune takes you by the hand and leads you slowly, but surely, to the dance floor. Expertly crafted synths toy with a signature bassline and this one will undoubtedly have people captivated when it drops.

Backing that up is ‘Ohrwurm’ - or ‘Earworm’ for those who don’t speak German! Literally translated, this phrase refers to a portion of a song which gets stuck in your head. And boy does this track do that! Simple yet highly effective synths spring across a swing beat rhythm and bouncing bass notes creating a monster that’ll have clubs jumping til the early hours. This is another outstanding Ram 12”.
