When Technique Recordings bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith come with a fresh release, they've got some big expectations to fulfil. True heads will know that their roots were firmly planted back in the old skool of nineties rave culture. And, this millennium, they've built and sustained a reputation as architects of the big room style that's seen drum and bass explode in popularity. So, how are they going to live up to that this time?

Well, “The Truth” promises great things from the outset. A panoramic landscape is laid out before us, with dunes of unforgiving percussive sounds overcast by clouds of minor key tonalities and dark-child dialogue. It's the quiet before the riot, punctured by an alarm call signal flare which sparks things into life. Then the drop delivers a straight-up punch-up between bass and treble, as call and response patterns merge and collide to create an unrelenting groove. This is the EDM paradigm delivered with a junglist mentality and rarely-seen layers of subtlety to satisfy the listener as well as the raver.

“Outlaw Renegade” teleports us straight to the wild west on some distant technologically-advanced planet. The intro lays out a scene of the deserted main street where building percussion and feedback sweeps are the harbingers of the gangsta vibes about to ride through. The drop is constructed around road-hard drums, which provide a rock-solid foundation for the bassline to go to work. And that low-end drives through with sub-shattering force, creating a wave to overdose even the most hardcore bass-addict.

We all know that Drumsound & Bassline Smith deliver nothing but big tunes. The two tracks on this release serve as a reminder that underpinning that floor-filling, rave-filling, arena-filing reputation, are some seriously impressive musical and technical skills. These pieces are cinematic in ambition and attention to detail and that means they're going to be drawn for time and time again by knowledgable DJs across the globe.

It hasn't taken long for Alerstorm and Ice Stereo to establish their neuro-tinged Gradual guise as one of Technique Recordings' heavy hitters. Having introduced themselves to the label with some dark and techy flavours, they were last seen on the Summer 2016 compilation bringing the more sunlit vibe of “Falling Pieces”. So, we know they've got multiple facets to their style, which makes this EP a particularly exciting prospect.

The title track, “Industry”, is a team-up with Gradual's compatriot Impak. The evolving arpeggios and pads of the intro are dramatically counteracted by percussion which grabs hold of us and drags us to the drop. Then there's an almighty battle between warping bass, technoid stabs and pitch-bent tones to keep the energy at an absolute peak. And the breakdown, rather than offering relief from the madness, just provides an opportunity to build back into a melee of tempo-switching craziness. If you want to take hold of the dance's attention and refuse to let it go, here's one to pull out.

“Caution” immediately envelopes us in dark velvet synths, which sweep and rise, set off by hints of percussion. There's anticipation and tension right from the get go, and it feels inevitable that the drop will bulldoze all before it. Which it does. The smoothness of the intro is brutally chopped into relentlessly staccato slices, supported on a foundation of driving bass and the kind of expertly-programmed drums we've come to expect from Gradual. This is a piece of rock-solid rollage that's the ravers won't be able to resist.

The title of “Helium” makes sense straight away. A crazy pitched-up vocal riff sets the tone, and things just get more twisted from there. Old skool stabs hark back to the anything-goes experimentalism of early jungle and the drop takes that idea and runs with it. The vocal sample is subjected to all manner of sonic violence and combined with the driving bass and beats to give a constantly-shifting array of patterns. This track is beautiful insanity, demonstrating that Gradual can give us something we've never heard before while still keeping the dancefloor firmly in their sights.

“Peevish” can be summed up by one word: intense. There's just a fractional moment of peace as a calming wave of pad introduces the track but within seconds that's disturbed by a distorted gritty stab. From there the track becomes a wall of energy. It hasn't even dropped before the low-end's filled out with a lava-flow of power. Then as the full assault of the drums and bassline hit, backed by unrelenting mid-range grind, it becomes a claustrophobic tunnel of music. When it's time to dark things up, this is a tune to draw for.

It might be a free download, but there's nothing cheap about these tunes. Each one has musicality, craft and rave power and each one teaches us something new about Gradual's production abilities. If this is the direction these Spanish technicians are heading in, then there's some distinctly dangerous material to look forward to.

The combined force of @CrissyCriss, @Maluxdnb and @ErbnDub is something which first rocked the drum & bass world in 2016. However, the trio each had their own standalone profiles which they’d spent years orchestrating, whether that was Malux’s fearsome reputation within neurofunk, Crissy Criss’ tastemaker status at Radio 1 or Erb n Dub’s sure-fire dancefloor anthems which had become a staple in DJ sets. But when they brought their individual sounds together, they began to cause carnage across the catalogues of many drum & bass imprints, whether that was Ram’s sister-label Program, or the formidable powerhouse Eatbrain. They’ve continued to create chaos on the live circuit, each having their own hold on the global market and showcasing their music from one end of the clubsphere to the next. The power which lies behind their music, heralded by a variety of mainstay DJs and producers, has provided a basis for their collaborative project and this is something they’re still building on. Their next move is a brand new single for War on Silence, the label which Crissy Criss has steadily built over the past six months. It presents the perfect platform for them to drop brand new music, as with Crissy Criss at the helm, War on Silence affords them the creative freedom which is necessary for such a groundbreaking outfit. 

‘Airlock’ has already made itself known throughout many UK and European venues, as well as across the Atlantic during the US tour which Crissy Criss recently undertook. Rolling through with ticking beat patterns and a breakdown which pulls you up to a climatic drop, before plummeting you down through its gyrating bassline and smashing percussive stabs, there’s no grabbing for the brakes throughout its descent into chaos. Each artist brings their own individual flare into the mix and you’re able to recognise their individual identities throughout the intricate patterning. It’s a crashing intro for any set; riddled with anticipation, you’re made aware of just how destructive this track could prove to be, just from the comfort of your home. Presented on War on Silence, it’s a step forward for the imprint. As well as the artists who are pushing it towards critical acclaim.
