Inspired by The City of Lost Children (co-directed by Amélie’s Jean-Pierre Jeunet) and Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, Pope Innocent X’s stark opener is a tease. “I really liked the idea of having an overture,” says Bertie. “There’s a scene in The Cook... with this little blonde dishwasher kid, and he’s singing in really high falsetto, while all this violence is going on around him. The song’s an introduction; you’re about to go into all these worlds.”

Tremors

Pope Innocent X’s first single is a playful confession. “It’s something I did once: deleted a text from someone’s phone without telling them,” Bertie admits. “Franc was getting lots of stories out of me, and moments like that time, where you should feel regret or remorse… well, that was the only story I could think of that was slightly evil. We all have a darkness, and there’s nothing wrong with admitting that, sometimes, that side of you can be alright.”

Mercy Killer

Bertie wrote pages and pages to tell the tale of a creature made up of a town: the cobblestone streets inhabitants walk on every day. “He spends his whole life being trodden on, wanting to be a real human. So one day he takes someone’s hand, breaks their fingers, and makes legs out of them; at night he takes their dreams. The chorus is a celebration – he thinks he’s done it – but unfortunately he didn’t use a very good glue to stick his bits together. We all need a better glue.”

Also written in Chicago, with its handclaps, programmed and steel drums “Accordion Boat” tells the story of the loneliest vessel in the world. “There’s no one living on the boat, it just moves around the sea by the puff of the bellows. The barnacles are the song’s vocals. If you hear the sound of the boat – this airy, clacking thing – as soon as you think of it your face becomes imprinted on the boat’s side, which is where the human part comes in... in my head anyway!”

Accordion Boat

This “raucous” number is about a robbery Blackman endured as a child. “My mum was tied up, phone chords ripped out of the walls. It wasn’t physically violent, but quite terrifying. I had to save my mum. It’s about being a kid, lying in bed, and playing hide and seek – peeping through your eyes to see someone coming into your room. I turned that into something playful, used the voice of the intruder in the verses. Mum likes it.”

Hide And Seek

Blackman’s most tender track is about her relationship with her father, internationally renowned painter Charles Blackman. “It’s about not really having a ‘normal’ father/daughter relationship. Because of who he is, the art world, me spending so much time in studios... I guess it’s about not having so much of a nurturing relationship, it was always more of a friendship.” Horns were added by Adam Simmons, who brought in flute, baritone saxophone, clarinet and more, plus two handmade music boxes which were played live.

Shadow Chasers

More spine-tingling noise from Kirin J. Callahan. “This is the tale of two people who were born with maps as heads. They’d stand at each edge of town, wondering why people kept coming up to them and pointing at their faces.” Eventually, the characters meet. “This stuff just comes out,” Blackman laughs. “I’m always like, ‘Ooh, imagine that!’”
