Now here's a story I'd like to tell you,
About how things went down in 1832,
A bill that is often called the first step to democracy
Was actually pushed through to maintain the aristocracy

It increased enfranchisement and got rid of rotten boroughs 
But let me tell you squire it was far from thorough,
It only gave a little bit of power to the lower middle class
but because of property qualifications it became a farce 

[Karl Marx even called it a trick to fool the middle class] 

Some MP's saw it as a chance to avoid revolution 
Others thought the common man wouldn't care about his constitution 
Almost all thought believed power should be in the hands of the elite
So of course it wasn't something they'd all agree to keep

The bill had to be read 3 times before it passed
All the while there was public protest, crowds unsurpassed, 
Until at last, the bill was passed,
Though there was much indignation in the upper class 

Fast forward to today their concerns are still relevant,
Voter apathy is so common its clearly evident
Politician's promises are so damn weak,
We hardly expect them to follow through so to speak

When David Cameron is the 19th Prime Minister from Eton, 
Who are we to say the institution has been beaten,
And have you seen the number of females lately,
in the house of commons their numbers aren't great see, 

[So what can we do?]


As voters we have the duty to choose on party policy,
On what they believe in and their philosophies,
Not to discriminate on appearance, accent, or creed, 
but make a balanced decision on the manifestos you read,

So make sure that you make an informed choice,
Rise up and be heard, exercise your voice
Lets give democracy the chance it needs
And into a brighter future we will hopefully proceed.
