Brooklyn's singer/songwriter/force of nature Wolkoff has teamed up with renowned NYC producer Atropolis to share their heavy new track “He’s A Lizard” (SoundCloud). This single is for all you Valentine's Day resistors and survivors of love gone awry.

The two approached the song as a stylistic homage to the spirit of dancehall; with a syncopated 1/16th note rhythm that sets the stage for staccato horns and short stabby chords to accent the mesmerizing kick and bass.

At more intimate moments, Atropolis harnesses the production through dreamlike synths. A fan of using clinking coins and smashing glass for claps in his drum kits, he accents the jam with shattering bottles which carries its own symbolic weight in the context of Wolkoff's uneasy lyrics and composition.

Wolkoff, the eponymous e-pop project from Brooklyn’s own Joanie Wolkoff, is fresh off a prolific 2016, which saw the release of her critically acclaimed debut album Without Shame (SoundCloud + Spotify), along with the release of her second collaborative single “Me & Mine” (SoundCloud) with The Hood Internet, and the long-awaited second GEMOLOGY single, “Come Around” (SoundCloud). She’s already hard at work on the follow-up to Without Shame, which will be out later this year… stay tuned!

This is Wolkoff’s first collaboration with Atropolis, who adeptly balances trained expression in classical piano and jazz guitar in a transcendent blend of ethnomusicology. Having collaborated with international artists like Midival Punditz (India), Dom La Nena (Brazil), Madosini (South Africa), and co-producing a remix for grammy award winning artists Celia Cruzand Willie Colon, Atropolis now joins forces with Wolkoff to bring you this chameleonic track.

Melting Records is pleased to snag and reissue the rare album Five Finger Discount from Budapest-based producer Nándor Kürtössy, known here as Savages. Originally released in 2008 in a limited fashion and only on compact disc, the album has been sought after by hip hop and trip hop heads alike. Melting Records has now issued this classic album for the first time on vinyl and is ready to give these tracks the wide audience they deserve.

Nándor Kürtössy is a prolific producer, behind many projects like Kovacs, Savages y Suefo, and Vega Ass, and is also the founder of his own Hungarian electronic music label, Mana Mana Records. Five Finger Discount was Nándor’s first release, born from the previous few years of sessions creating tracks for himself and his friends. Encouraged to collect these cuts onto an album, Savages was created and this remarkable album revealed. Its legend has grown since the initial release with some considering Five Finger Discount a classic of eastern European hip hop culture. The album track “You’re My Chocolate” has since become quite popular among the Greek downtempo DJ scene.

The melancholic guitars and tranquil atmosphere of “You’re My Chocolate” are indeed special, and its languid beats lead the listener through an evocative journey told through sound. This cut is indicative of Savages’ vibe and is only one of the highlights on this jam-packed album. Cuts like “Lookin’ For You”, “Long Distances”, and “The Blow” also captivate by combining hip hop, vintage lounge, and dance floor appeal into a heady, sample-rich stew. Nándor’s sense of humor is also evident throughout as spoken snippets and spy-crafted rhythms intermingle within the playful arrangements. Savages is on point … and this Five Finger Discount is a hefty bargain.

An exploration of traditional Chadian music with an electronic twist... Chad is in many ways a blind spot on the map of today's global musical conversation. Overlooked, misunderstood and misrepresented, outside observers rarely concede the country an autonomous voice over its past, present and future. N’Djamena, the dusty capital of Chad with its well-kept stories of boundary-breaking musical collaborations and thirst for experimentation is a city that reflects the country's diversity: the arid North, bordering the Sahara, where nomadic tribes revere the endless desert with their handcrafted instruments. The lush tropical South, where the frenetic drumming of local initiation ceremonies blends with sounds of neighboring Congo and Cameroon. Right in the middle: N'Djamena, a forgotten melting pot of cultures and peoples bursting with unrecorded stories of life at the margins of the world's attention. Tackling this view is precisely one of the aims of Pulo NDJ. In May 2018, Nickodemus accepted an invitation from Hape Collective to travel to N'Djamena to teach a group of young adults DJ'ing and electronic music production, which resulted in the encounter between a group of talented artists from Cameroon, Chad, Congo and Togo. After a weeklong series of listening to original songs & demos, the recordings continued in a pop-up studio created by DJ Buosis & Nickodemus which culimated in Desert To Douala, an album featuring 11 songs, all originally written and recorded in N’Djamena. The project found its inspiration in the city's un-narrated diversity and seeks to explore the possibilities offered by technology to demonstrate how the country’s rich heritage connects with existing musical conversations. It strives to create bridges in a world of walls. It has been a yearlong creative process that built friendships and fostered understanding among people united by a passion for music and creation.
