Dear Jane — Artist Statement (Phil Smith & Diana de Rooy)
Dear Jane was written by Phil Smith and Diana de Rooy as an artistic response to the exhibition by Jane Giblin, a celebrated and widely respected Australian artist recognised for her distinctive visual storytelling.
We have no personal or family connection to the subjects of the artwork—this song comes purely from our perspective as observers, interpreting in word and music what we experienced at the exhibition.
The exhibition featured The Mitchell Scrapbook, a curated collection of over 200 ink drawings originally created by Catherine Penwarne Mitchell (1847–1878), later compiled and annotated by her sister Sarah with assistance from their niece Grace. Catherine’s drawings reflect life on Tasmania’s east coast in the 19th century and show stylistic influence from Tasmanian and London Punch publications.
Dear Jane is not a historical retelling, but a creative reflection—our response to the art, the legacy it represents, and the way Jane Giblin re-framed and brought that history to life through her exhibition.
