4x4 was founded in 2002 after a successful collaboration with hiplife titans Buk Bak (https://www.facebook.com/pages/BUK-BAK/283082231736938). Since then 4X4 have dominated much of the hiplife game, with a string of hits and four highly successful albums.

In 2012, 4x4 truly went international when they joined hands with 8 other African acts including Fally Ipupa (https://www.facebook.com/FallyIpupaOfficial) and 2Face Idibia (https://www.facebook.com/2faceofficial?fref=ts) to form the ONE8
Supergroup, which recorded the global hit single Hands across the World (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ft0FaCsH8W4) with international R&B superstar R Kelly (https://www.facebook.com/Rkelly?fref=ts). 

Their latest album, Waist & Power, contains 3 of the biggest Ghanaian hits of 2011: the title song Waist & Power (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vd0l-jembM&list=UU7e-YJVhfQuSzSDpT9p8kJA), Yesi Yesii (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Quvt2giZPjg) and more recently Womanizer. The album displays each member's specific style: Captain Planet raps in four different Ghanaian languages, CoDed adds his ragga/dancehall flavor, and Fresh Prince sings the R&B hooks. Powered by beats by Ghana's finest engineers, in particular Appietus (http://www.akwaabamusic.com/appietus-tip-of-the-iceberg/) on the 3 hits mentioned above, the album also features production by Kaywa, JQ, BBryte and Playboi.

A new generation of Ghana artists is re-inventing Ghanaian pop music, and Ruff N Smooth are leading the pack.

A year ago, Ruff N Smooth (https://www.facebook.com/ruffnsmoothgh) were still practically unknown on Accra’s music circuit, however they were quick to make an impact with massive hits, most notably Swagger and Martha (Sex machine). Teaming up with some of Ghana’s hottest next-generation producers, such as Richie (it’s a hit, man…), Kaywa or Kill Beats (https://twitter.com/killbeatz), Ruff N Smooth were quick to assemble an album that showcases a dramatic change in Ghanaian pop: a shift away from highlife melodies, and an overall aesthetic geared towards the Nigerian market.

The duo sings mainly in pidgin English, making their music accessible outside of Ghana – and it’s working: they are already playing regularly in Nigeria, but also Europe and the US.

Yet – as is so often the case – their music has been almost invisible to non-Ghanaians. We hope you appreciate their modern, crossover take on GH music!
