UK club virtuoso, @joemakemusic flows through the genres for number 23 in the Junction 2 mix series.

Meticulous in the studio as well as behind the decks, Joe holds some of the most distinguished releases of the past decade. From the seminal ‘Claptrap’ on Hessle Audio, ‘MB / Studio Power On’ on Hemlock, or his most recent ‘Get Centred’ EP on Cómeme, his productions are a style-fusing, intricate, genre melting pot, which have have been a constant and refreshing injection into the UK club scene. Staying true to form, Joe plays with the listeners expectations as he expertly weaves through 60 minutes of body movers.

@gwenans' rise through the ranks has always been driven by a love for the music. She hasn't produced any big breakout hit and never dreamt of headlining on a super-sized main stage. Instead, she has quietly honed her craft playing at intimate London parties like Toi Toi and her own Hi Fi, made a successful move to Berlin where she fomented close ties with cultured crews like The Ghost and impressed with her pitch-perfect sets as a resident at London's Pickle Factory as well as the beloved Freerotation in her native Wales. Her sound is rooted in house and techno that is deep and kinetic, but it can stretch way beyond and into a world of leftfield electronics and heady ambient. 

On this week's mix, Gwenan does what she does best: establishes a groove your body can't resist then slowly tweaks and builds on it for 80 minutes. There are never any big left turns or flashy tracks, just a well-sequenced, neatly mixed and super-tight selection of irresistibly good records. Some go heavy on the bass, some twist and turn on a cosmic synth and some have a machine-made soul that warms you to your core.

Avenue Red is proud to present a long-time favourite artist of ours, a man who for over 20 years has been lurking in the darkest, most shadowy lairs of the deep subterranean underground... enter German musical mastermind Stephan Laubner, better known to most down here as STL, also as Lunatik Sound System. Located somewhere amid the Harz mountains in northern Germany, he is well known as a talented and vastly innovative producer, especially in experimental electronic, ambient and deep, dub techno circles. But almost nobody, even in these tightest and narrowest of niches has ever heard a DJ mix from this rather mysterious figure (aside from a totally out of the blue RA Podcast in 2014). Today, that changes, as he has decided to unleash some real fury right here on Avenue Red.

His debut release was called "Portside Waves" and was the 13th release on Perlon in 1999, with this spooky, insanely hypnotic track coming with some bizarre infinite locked-groove loops on one side - the flipside featuring Ricardo Villalobos & Martin Schopf under their Ric Y Martin guise. This paved the way for a discography that, at time of writing, totals approximately 100 releases. As well as being the mainstay of his Something label (link below), his releases are scattered across the likes of Smallville Records, echospace [detroit], Echocord, Silent Season, Assemble Music, Phonica White, The Untold Stories and many more. We highly respect and recommend a visit to his hand-rolled Something Records website too, which is packed with soul and contains some amazing secrets waiting to be found.

This mix is a live DJ performance riddled with trippy effects and unusual mixing techniques. A mix like no other. It is alien, beautiful, strange, venomous, intoxicating and downright awe-inspiring, as with everything this rare Midas has touched.

"Since a while ago I have been in contact with Pierre AKA Caillou. His new label is Chateau Chépère on which I have an upcoming EP. We chatted about music and mixing and shared a few links to each other's publications (he made 2 Avenue Red Podcast episodes: 136 and 172). He was sending me a link to an Avenue Red mix he was doing and so I - or we - had the idea to send a mix from me to AR as well.

Since most of the music I make is usually within the studio I am not really a DJ - more a production head. Nevertheless, sometimes I dig out those old vinyls and record a tape. The mix provided was done pretty much out of the feel and almost desire to play some records again. I don't do this every day. I keep that for special times or at meetings with some friends or family. Actually this session turned out to be very much full of life and energy. I wanted to keep with a certain flow. Tightness was not the best. However I think it is still enjoyable. Not just a dead mix, but something coming from taking the action to create something enjoyable, at least for my side. For me the music and the mixing often is something that belongs together. I mean a dub techno mix probably would not have been done this way. Back in December, 2018, we had the pleasure of hosting a special live set from Australian producer Nali at a party at OHM, Berlin. Nic is not only a supremely talented producer, but also a close friend of our collective, and someone who has been a part of our journey from the very start. His performance was a true highlight of the night and its careful pacing, delicate melodies and understated power have stayed clear in our memories ever since. 

Indeed, over time this live set has grown to become an important reference point for us, as it naturally formed the basis of our first EP release with Nic. Together, we have dived into these memorable 90 minutes time and time again, drawing direct inspiration for the tracks on the release from the music and ideas presented within. 

As we prepare to release our first record - Nali's Chance Encounters EP - we’re happy to share a recording of the live set that brought this release into being. We hope you can feel (or relive) the energy and electricity that inspired us to embark on this journey together.

Her sound fuses percussion with left field techno & bass and she's previously released with @itsfemmeculture @ninjatune & @cutcrxss.. she's got a very bright future ahead of her. Pandora's Jukebox (@pandoras-jukebox) is a perfect name for a DJ who always serves up sonic surprises. By day, Yasmina Dexter works as an art director, but in the evening she deconstructs electronic music before reassembling it in hypnotic fashion. Her dead-of-night soundtracks are both trippy and hypnotic whether she is hosting her NTS show or playing as a resident at Cicciolina Paris. Her abstract, slowed-down take on techno joins inconceivable dots between a broad array of sounds and scenes and sounds that leave you enjoyably discombobulated. 

This week's mix is another irresistible musical mood board from Pandora's Jukebox. Slow in tempo but dynamic with its detail, it unfolds like a half-remembered dream: fragments of melody and a snatched vocal snippet come and go, a well-swung rhythm becomes a bumping beat and shards of percussion fade away into a gorgeous ambient pad, all without fanfare. Put this one on and prepare to get truly lost in sound.

Zodiac Childs channels the spirit of UK hardcore; sonically leaning on the sounds of electro, classic breaks and techno. They tend to take their audience on a journey across the entire nightlife experience, from atmospheric opener to the energy of abandoned northern English factories and mills, rusted and empty yet filled by 303 basslines. 

With otherworldly EP releases on Exalt, Further Electronix and their own Zodiac Wax they will now finally add to their impressive discography with their new LP:
