One year on from their debut, Rainer Veil explore deep, brittle rave variants on their 2nd EP for Modern Love. The five tracks of 'New Brutalism' are a product of their Northern environment, making pointed reference to the kind of deep-rooted rave heritage documented in Mark Leckey's 'Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore' soundtrack through a prism of angular, vulnerable club music. Conceptually, It adopts a similar perspective on British nightlife to Burial or Lee Gamble, surveying the 'floor as if during an out-of-body experience or through closed eyes from a corner of the club at 5am. Opening track, 'UK Will Not Survive' captures that sensation beautifully with its tape-saturated layers of wistful vocal, woody 2-step and daubs of Reese bass, whilst 'Three Day Jag' isolates that curious blend of hedonism and introspection innate to early UK 'ardcore, albeit without the narco-sweats. Closing number 'Run Out' doffs a cap to grey building sites and strobe-lit clubs alike, channelling diffuse field recordings and half-heard breakbeats with a bleary-eyed, tired and emotional quality.

Onto the information about how I did it:

First off, the word hash is a reference to the method I used to create the synth sounds. Hash = minced meat. I basically "minced" a lot of different formanty sounds and stuck them together(it's more complicated than this). It's also a play on the 'acid' genre which has similar sounds, but I'm using a very different technique to elicit similar sounds associated with acid, so i've decided to call it 'hash'. I'm clearing this up because I keep getting messages about people talking about their recent fun with 'hash' but i've had enough of that :)

I got to use a modular setup for the first time. Spent many hours on the thing and came back with tons of samples some of which I've microedited and such later in my DAW. I'd say about 70-80% of the sounds are sampled from the synth.

Reason I did this was to separate making sounds and sequencing them as it's easy to get bogged down continuing to make sounds.

 Toward the end I used his disklavier :)) I wrote the midi for a vst initially, but then used it on a real piano, sampled it, then edited it afterward. For some reason on his old one you get a stringy kinda sound that appealed to me when you arppegiate.

Sierra Leone and used it to create two crazy tracks with his 808. 
For the track "Maslacak" his old uncle Mamadou Maroodiga sang some critical
vocals about the hunters in the Kuru hills. 
The other side of the record will take you straight to the next rave.

DOMA in Russian means “at home”. For the last two months, my home has been a small city close to the Atlantic Ocean named Saint-Gilles-Croix-De-Vie. I am there, luckily, surrounded by so many soundscapes: new birds, different noises of waves, thunderstorms, and hundreds of seagulls. I'm spending so much time observing seagulls’ life here, how they are making nests on our roof, flying against the wind, catching fish on the waves. I was recording flute with open windows so you can hear all those Atlantic noises. First track it’s a flute singing to seagulls, then seagulls to midi and midi to flute chain. Some of the tracks sound like soundscapes or cycles which you can loop. It’s like a daily routine of moments that I have started to appreciate more and more during this lockdown, finding surprises inside myself without a mirror.

Ever the aural adventurer, Carmen Villain has long traversed a boundless array of sounds, deftly moving from art nouveau pop to fog-laden avant-dub. Yet at every artistic turn, the Norwegian-Mexican’s chameleon-like charm seldom loses its alluring, organic beauty. Fresh off her contribution to 2020’s A Little Night Music… compilation, Carmen joins Geographic North’s Sketch for Winter series for its 9th installment. Perlita, named after Carmen’s grandmother living in Puebla, Mexico, is a sweetly somber reflection on the ever-present cycle of and hibernation and reemergence.

The A side begins with “Everything Without a Shadow”, a wide-angled and windswept vista of expansive permafrost and still-glowing embers of a recently extinguished fire. A sign of life in an otherwise desolate place. “Two Halves Touching” continues to drift through the frigid scene, lightly pulsing underneath a muted but vibrant tundra until coming upon echoes of voices chanted into the snowdrift. “Light in Phases” follows the cue with hurried hesitance, uncovering a sonic slush of radiant zither, blurred voices, and calm resolution.

“Things That Are Solid” begins to thaw the B side, strolling through newly uncovered verdancy, welcoming murmurs peeking out of the snow. With “Molina”, any last remnants of Winter have disappeared, leaving only a solemn suite of piano motifs breaking ground like seedlings bursting to life. With help from Johanna Scheie Orellana on flute and alt-flute, the album’s closer “Aqua Azul'' floats along with unencumbered motion like a happy stone skating across a tranquil pond.
