'Been and gone' is one of those phrases that crop up regularly in traditional blues songs. John included it to title the following song poem which  encapsulates the image of a man and his workfellows turning at the end of the day to the sound of the blues and solace from a jug. I 
sensed there was a  message in there somewhere, a philosophical thought nestling deep within the folds. In contrast, a chorus has been added which is as simple as it gets and, I hope, faithful to those old-style songs.

BEEN HERE AND GONE
It starts with a man on the porch playing his guitar
The sun a whisper behind the witness trees
The day, August's cotton waiting to be ginned.

The hill country speaks to the man
The way the river speaks to the logjam.
Down in the bottom, the field hands
Make the long trip up the hill
To hear the truth come straight from a jug.

It comes on the wind and across the hogback.
Sometimes it is found, a mite in the meal
And is harvested upon its sultry merits.
