The “Zeitgeist” album is available now!

Camo & Krooked are back with their new album “Zeitgeist”. Two years on and the follow up to “Cross The Line” truly encapsulates the sound of Camo & Krooked 2.0. Already seeing heavyweight DJ support from across the board, “Zeitgeist” is jam-packed with disco, French house and minimal influences, which are merged together with the signature Camo & Krooked sound to form an awe-inspiring 15-track package. The album also features key collaborations with fellow Hospital star Metrik and Norwegian indie-electronic duo Lemâitre .

Kicking things off is the epic “Turn Back The Time” which introduces us into this brave new world of sultry synths, sharp beats and disco-influenced aesthetics which form the backbone of the album. Then we have the familiar sounds of the ever-catchy undulating white noise of “All Night” and dancefloor detonator “Move Around (ft. Ian Shaw)”. Watch out for other gems including “Aurora (ft. Metrik)” with its epic trance-like soundscape, the soulful sounds of “Loving You Is Easy”, the enticing and experimental “Ruhepuls” and collaborative smasher “Dreamcatcher (ft. Lemaitre)” with its fidgety beats and infectiously upbeat vibe.

Expect the unexpected as Camo & Krooked continue to push the boundaries with their impressive opus, “Zeitgeist”. Like all the best albums, “Zeitgeist” makes sense as a whole and should be enjoyed from start to finish.

Le groove imparable de Keziah Jones, la voix chaude et les slides mythiques de Ben Harper et la mystique profonde du maalem gnaoui Mahmoud Guinea dans un seul et même projet : l’âme afro-gnaoua renoue enfin avec le blues originel en remplaçant la contrebasse et la basse électrique par un guembri amplifié à outrance. Pari fou ? Pas pour Idriss El Mehdi, qui nous propose dans son premier LP "Wild Bird" un blues-funk d’une finesse et d’une modernité rares, qui rend hommage à la musique ancestrale des descendants d’esclaves d’Afrique et d’Amérique du Nord.

Idriss El Mehdi

Elevé dans une famille d’intellectuels, avec une double culture franco-marocaine, Idriss El Mehdi a la chance de baigner dès son jeune âge  dans la musique classique arabe et occidentale, le jazz et le rock. 
Pianiste de talent, il accompagne les ténors du coin dans les rares clubs de jazz de Casablanca.

Sa double culture est aussi musicale. Jeune homme, il suit un parcours brillant dans les prestigieuses écoles américaines de musique en France (American School of Modern Music, Bill Evans Piano Academy), tout en conservant un lien fort avec son Maroc natal. C’est ainsi qu’il y fera dix ans plus tard une rencontre décisive qui changera le cours de sa vie et qui lui ouvrira les portes du mysticisme soufi populaire : le prestigieux maalem gnaoui Mahmoud Guinea.

Idriss El Mehdi apprend à jouer du Guembri et forge son identité musicale : « Moi, le pianiste habitué depuis tant d’années à avoir à ma disposition 88 notes de musique pour m’exprimer, je me trouvais face à 3 simples cordes faites de boyaux de chèvre. Et dans ses cordes demeurait toute l’histoire de la musique, depuis sa création. »

Le jeune homme démarre alors une série d’expériences avec différentes formations, entre afro-jazz, chansons à textes et collaborations avec des grands noms de la pop  et du rock français (Axel Bauer, Calogero, Julie Zenatti, Hubert Mounier…) et internationaux (Cerrone, Luz Casal, Gary Christian…).

Le natif de Casablanca puise dans son identité multiple, entre ses racines africaines et sa culture musicale anglo-saxonne rock et blues,  la matière nécessaire pour la composition de ce premier disque, « Wild Bird ». Ainsi il ravive l’esprit blues acoustique, en y ajoutant du rythme. Il fait cohabiter avec intelligence une basse lourde au son granuleux, une guitare aux slides vertigineux, un jeu de piano minimaliste, le tout porté par une section rythmique puissante.


Le disque : Wild Bird 

La maturité musicale arrive avec cet opus intitulé sobrement «Wild Bird». Il décide d’assumer sa passion pour la folk song américaine et se lance dans l’aventure, recrutant des musiciens de talent avec qui il arrange une à une les chansons du disque, fruit d’un long travail de recherche rythmique et de thèmes originaux. 

Le jeune homme au regard lumineux chante d’une voix rauque et étouffée des textes personnels, prenant souvent position sur des thèmes sociaux. L’album s’ouvre sur « No problem », titre phare écrit par Pierre Grillet (« Madame Rêve » de Bashung, Nicoletta…), ode utopique à l’égalité, qui impose d’emblée le groove afrobeat du projet. On retrouve une seconde version de cette chanson plus tard dans le disque avec le maître du genre, Tony Allen. 

Vient ensuite « Kill The Beast », brûlot engagé contre les puissants de ce monde, dans une tradition folk portée par un rythme chaloupé qui rafraîchit le genre. 

Une intro brute, entre rythmes africains et voix cosmiques, dans la tradition Floydienne, annonce « Wild Bird », magnifique titre à l’esprit pop, où l’on reconnaît à peine le guembri, fondu dans des arrangements épurés.

On fait ensuite un petit détour vers un morceau déroutant, « Guembaia », entre rock, mpb brésilienne et transe gnaoua, sur un texte de Teofilo Chantre, Milo Lee et des chants ancestraux en Bambara.

L’afrobeat revient en force avec le double titre « Piano for Kayi » et « Goddamn The Pusher Man », qui démarre au piano et se poursuit sur un groove entêtant, sur le thème du dealer maudit, dans un clin d’oeil malicieux à Easy Rider et Nina Simone.

Le disque s’achève sur le bluesy et spirituel « One O One », douce ballade écrite par Lyly M, la soeur d’Idriss, qui clôture un LP audacieux, riche et éclectique, à l’image d’Idriss El Mehdi, de son parcours atypique et de son incroyable talent.
