In the classical margam of bharatanatyam, the varnam is the recital’s centerpiece, its longest and most emotionally charged performance. In “Tome of Stars“, the varnam appears as the twenty-nine-poem section “Senescence”. Following the exaltation of Anthesis, the beloved as a celestial goddess, love now descends from the stars into the gravity of human frailty. 

This sonnet reflects a deeply personal reckoning with impermanence, loss, and the struggle to live authentically in the wake of irreversible separation. It blends three interrelated themes: the steady erosion of memory over time, the non-possessive philosophy of love as expressed in the Basque song “Txoria Txori“, and the existential challenge posed by Jiddu Krishnamurti’s assertion that “truth is a pathless land.” The poem mourns the dissolution of shared experience with the beloved, attempts to preserve meaning through music and memory, and ultimately resigns itself to a love that gives without demand. Rather than affirming emotional closure, the sonnet dramatizes the ache of open-ended love in a psychological realm without certainties or maps.

Each day grants gifts I long to gift away,
And decades drift, like windswept petals, gone.
The years bleed by, as memories decay,  
Our time together fades, like frost at dawn.

Joan Baez introduced to me a song, 
A verse in Basque, adorned with folk-strummed strings.
The meaning cuts through yearning, sharp and strong.
The melody soars sweet on timeless wings.

On ivory keys, I played that soulful tune,  
With strings, I spun a sound of wind and rain.  
Like birdsong, bright beneath a pregnant moon,  
I sang to you a lover’s scarred refrain.  

Love’s not a trade where equal debts are paid,
But freely given, never to be weighed.
