Emotional Response starts 2017 with a mini-album of ambient-equatorial enlightenment by Australia’s mysterious Tropical Hi-Fi. The final record from an artist appearing on the label’s Schleißen series, this also points to the future.

Based somewhere in the far flung Northern Territories, the music of Hi-Fi’s pre-incarnation Electric Egypt was first discovered via the note-worthy airwaves of L.A’s outstanding Dublab radio station.

As the wonderfully diverse internet shows and project’s dense, hip-hop inspired collages came to fruition with 2012’s Exotica release, a dual awareness and sporadic contact was maintained whenever a signal could be established with Hi-Fi base camp. As the Schleißen series was formed, the studio-DJ-cut-up-mix of Oceanic Mythology was warmly received as an inspired counterpoint to the dense offering from Don’t DJ.

These first real solo recordings from the Hi-Fi crew - whoever he/she/they maybe - moves on from the cut’n’paste of Electric Egypt to seek a meditative vision.

Ambient, drone and field recordings are all part of a drifting tropical flavour that encompasses the listener. Music truly inspired by it’s surroundings, this is not some music journal, flying in to sample a life and it’s sounds, but the real, living entity and it can be heard deep across 8 short pieces.

None is more typified than here with Tahiti Blue, where fellow traveler Mike Cooper layers his ubiquitous steel blues over simple, lilting drums.

Berlin based Darkjazz band Dictaphone have been making sublime music for a decade now. Over the years this band has achieved cult status with such luminary fans as Nils Frahm who recently included the song peaks from their Nacht Ep in his late night tales compilation. Using deep cuts from their vinyl collection they have put together a journey of 80’s experimental ambient and electronics from their original home of Brussels. This year saw their entire back catalogue (long out of print) re-issued by Denovali and this month will see a momentous ‘10 years of Dictaphone’ showcase performance at the legendary Saal 1 in the Funkhouse, Berlin. We are excited to kick off our second colab with Quite Calm Records and Denovali with this intriguing exclusive mix for FWD.DJ.

Following the release of his latest album, Oh !, Ezéchiel Pailhès hands his creations over to a cast of remixers for an EP that takes his experimental chanson into exciting, eclectic new realms. Building on his previous two albums, Oh ! found Pailhès further exploring the intersection between poetry and music, with his conservatoire-trained piano playing setting the mood and the song-writing verve of his many years in Nôze lingering in the background.

Parisian duo Archil & Leon are renowned for their innovative instrument designs and their productions. Here they bring their highly customised creative flair to “J’aimerais tant” with a subtle treatment that works glitchy processes into the romantic swoon of the original track in a tastefully inventive manner.

Sharing Pailhès’ accomplished approach to instrumentation, Oakland-based husband and wife duo The Saxophones gently unfurl a bed of bittersweet guitar, flute and sax underneath Pailhès’ downcast rendition of Victor Hugo’s words on “Oh ! Pourquoi te cacher ?”.

The one and only Chloé exercises her evocative twist on minimal wave as she orchestrates an array of synths to re-frame “Sans l’oublier”. The words of 19th Century poet Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, as sung by Pailhès, are embellished with a richly noirish composition that borders on the baroque.

Gautier Vizioz is a talented Parisian beatmaker who collaborates with a broad tapestry of local artists. His own interpretation of “Oh ! Pourquoi te cacher ?” glides between dream-pop reverie and deeply rooted funk – a fittingly luxurious backdrop to the song.

Brandt Brauer Frick take on “Wolf 359”, one of the album’s few instrumental tracks, and infuse Pailhès’ keys with their own organic timbres played with an electronic attitude. The lines blur between the motorik pulse of the core rhythm section, the skittering percussion played on top and the interplay of synthesised tones and raw piano.
