Certain Girls (feat. Sugar Minott)

Last August we released the trailer of what “DubFiles at Song Embassy” will be. It’s a documentary and an album altogether. In February 2015 Paolo Baldini, together with reggae acts Mellow Mood, Forelock, graphic novelist Davide Toffolo and anthropologist Icir Mimina Di Muro, brought his mobile studio to the Song Embassy Yard in Kingston, Jamaica, to record around thirty little-known artists from the ghetto.

The recordings lasted around a week. In the most classic soundsystem fashion, the singers would grab the mic improvising or giving new renditions of their hits on the riddims produced by Baldini. Everything was live and good first take. Every performance was filmed and the artists were later interviewed to bare witness to the incredible amount of talents Jamaica generates, the majority of whom get unfortunately little or no exposure from the media.

The first single from the album is “Boom (Wah Da Da Deng)” by Hempress Sativa Muzik. The videoclip premiered for a lucky crowd during Paolo Baldini’s session at the Reggae University at the Rototom Sunsplash - Official page, Europe’s largest reggae festival, which takes place in Spain at the end of August.

Hempress Sativa, who already featured in Mellow Mood’s latest record, is one of the rising stars of Jamaican roots music, daughter of the great Albert Malawi (selecter of Jah Love soundsystem) and part of the Jah Ova Evil Records / J.O.E collective. In “Boom (Wah Da Da Deng)” she proves to master dj-style and literally breathtaking lyrics.

The single, available on iTunes and all digital platforms and soon available on 7” vinyl, is the first in a series to be released before the “DubFiles at Song Embassy” album is published next spring. The record will be published by La Tempesta Dub, the newborn label managed by Baldini himself and reggae band Mellow Mood. To celebrate the birth of the label, the band announced a handful of Italian headline shows at the end of November. Paolo Baldini DubFIles will perform as aftershow alongside some very special guest who will be announced soon.

Helmed by world-renowned drum & bass and reggae DJ Liondub, the Liondub Internatonal imprint has made massive strides since it's inception. Releasing a steady stream of top-shelf material from a growing stable of producers and vocalists, it has become the go-to source for emerging music at the nexus of reggae, dubstep and drum & bass sounds. Last year saw the christening of the Liondub45 sub label, which specializes in collectible deep, vintage dub and scorching Roots Reggae 7”s and showcases the talents of a veritable who’s who of modern Dub producers and original foundation vocalists. 

After the runaway success of it's premier release, featuring Jahdan Blakkamoore's vivid anthem "The General", Liondub45 returns with another winning 7" pairing New York City dub master Ticklah with the sweet sounds of  Lincoln "Sugar" Minott. As a singer, producer and soundsystem organizer Sugar Minott's career chronicles the transformation of reggae music from lovers rock and rub-a-dub to the rise of ragga dancehall and the computerized riddims of today. Mr. Minott launched his solo career at Coxsone Dodd's Studio One where he spearheaded the popular practice of "versioning" existing riddims. He went on to form his own Black Roots label and Youth Promotion sound system which together fostered the careers of a huge number of Jamaica's greatest reggae dancehall artists. Sugar Minott's enormous creative spirit survives him in these beautiful words laid down over a jubilant dub from Ticklah. 

NYC based keyboardist, engineer, and producer Victor Axelrod, aka Ticklah, has been an integral part of the NYC music scene for over a decade. He is a founding member of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Antibalas and the Easy Star All-Stars with whom he continues to record and perform. In the past several years he has recorded keys for Mark Ronson, appearing on Version as well as the Amy Winehouse album. He has released his own Ticklah VS Axelrod LP on NYC reggae label Easy Star, for whom he also co-produced and engineered several roots compilations including the Pink Floyd cover album Dub Side Of The Moon. A longtime fan of Sugar Minot, Mr. Axelrod was thrilled to have the opportunity to record with such a talented and influential artist. The two together have produced a momentous recording.

Praise His Name is an uplifting message for the masses; to give hope to the downtrodden and remind us of our need for spiritual wealth. No one could say it better than Sugar Minott, whose own works supported generations, and here he has done so with a bittersweet minor melody that fits perfectly over Ticklah's rolling bass, muffled rimshot and lush organ sound. Minott's erie harmonies ring out with crystal clarity in the mix which is wrapped in spring reverb, chugging organ and punctuated by glistening agogo bells while rippling echos punch holes in the dub verison. A classic like this comes along once in a life time and this one is for the ages.
