Disquiet Junto Project 0114: Five Sines

Okay, no idea what’s going to happen here. For the first time I’m keeping a detailed log.

1st – chunk 5 is stretched on a sliding scale, then tempo-adjusted back to 5 minutes. Bass is reduced, treble slightly increased. This will be some sort of sound-bed for the track.

2nd – chunk 1 is imported, tempo’d to 2:30, cloned and appended to itself in reverse, creating a sort of palindrone. This is then raised in pitch by 2 octaves.

3rd – chunk2 is imported. The first 30 seconds is stretched by a factor of 10 at high resolution, then put through Blue Cat plugin to gain an oscillator effect, then a ring modulator which produces the whistling sound. Then it’s Corkscrewed, just to make it more annoying. This is given a 1 minute fade in and out.

4th – chunk 3 is imported. It is tempo’d down to 60 seconds, then raised by 3 octaves. This is put through a delay filter called Sci-Fi Special, then a flanger. It’s then Paulstretched to 5 minutes at medium resolution. It’s the eerie ‘space-whistle’ throughout.

5th – chunk 4 is converted to a wav file and fed into ambient_v.3.5 for granular mistreatment. This is cut up, cloned and further treated, and provides the bleeps, bloops, the intro, as well as glitchy bits and hints of melody.

This week’s project is a celebration of the new album by Dave Seidel, who also goes by Mysterybear. Titled ~60 Hz, it just came out on the great Irritable Hedgehog record label. Seidel has extracted five parts of one track from his album and made them available for reworking by the Disquiet Junto. The album is based on combining sine waves, and in keeping with that approach we will in this project combine parts of his album. These are the 5 steps:

Step 1: Download the following file, a Zip archive that contains 5 different tracks:

Step 2: Extract the five files and listen to them.

Step 3: Combine elements of the files into one track. You cannot add anything, but you can process them as you wish. An emphasis should be put on layering the material.

Step 4: Upload the file to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud and describe your approach and process in the text field associated with the track.

Step 5: Listen to other members’ tracks as they appear in the Disquiet Junto feed on SoundCloud, and comment on them when you have the time.

Chakra Esoteria

The cult of Multi Culti expands it’s horizons to include Nicola Cruz, backed by remixes from Xanga and L_cio.

Nicola Cruz’s music beautifully invokes the landscapes and rituals of his homeland, Ecuador, a country that contains both the majestic Andes mountains and the mighty Amazon jungle.  His sound is an amalgamation of folkloric traditions and ancestral mythologies, crafted with fine detail and slick production techniques. 

In 2012 Nicola collaborated with Nicolas Jaar on Clown & Sunset, and has since worked towards his debut album on ZZK Records.
Between past and present, traditional and modern, Nicola fits into a growing scene of South American artists exploring local indigenous and Afro-cosmologies, among fellow artists and ZZK label-mates like Chancha Via Circuito. 

For his debut on Multi Culti, Nicola has created Mantis, and it is arguably his most accomplished club record to date, a 105bpm tribal chugger that flexes shamanic authority over hearts and minds. Invocacion goes even deeper into the new, new age, presenting traditional instrumentation and mysticism in a modern framework. Australia’s Xanga joins in with a super lively, rhythmic remix that is as joyful as it is deep. Finally, Brazil’s L_cio presents a version that strips things down for club play, upping the tempo while keeping the characteristic flavour of the flute.
