When Aim’s Cold Water Music dropped in 1999 on cult Manchester label Grand Central Records, it was an underground sensation. Preceded by a string of well received 12”s and EP’s the album was eagerly anticipated and Aim delivered in a big way, elevating his trademark sound to new heights with a collection of uplifting cinematic soundscapes, dark jazz fuelled breaks and hard hitting hip-hop beats (featuring guest rap legends QNC, AG and YZ). Uniquely, there was a sense of nostalgic sentimentality running through the record and the whole thing was underpinned by a musicality often missing in sample based production.

Pushed on by organic, word-of-mouth promotion and the success of the Aim Live band that sold out Shepherds Bush Empire and smashed Glastonbury’s Jazz World stage in 2007, Cold Water Music went on to shift over 100,000 units and is now seen as a ground-breaking, genre defining UK classic that has inspired legions of bedroom beat-makers.

The original vinyl pressing sold out within weeks of it’s release making it a sought after collectors piece with rocketing Ebay prices for clean copies. After years of fan requests, both ATIC and Aim felt the time was right to finally repress the wax. Says Andy Turner (Aim), “Rather than just repress the original album, we remastered and recut it from scratch using the original DAT master tapes.”

Every now and then an album comes along that both resonates and endures. An album that stays with those first to hear it and one that is discovered and treasured by generations to follow. Seventeen years on from it’s initial release Cold Water Music sounds as fresh, as inventive and as necessary as it ever did.

Wu-Tang Clan were arguably one of the most influential groups in hip hop history, for many reasons. For starters they had so many differing personalities, you were bound to like (someone in the group). They had ground-breaking production (courtesy of the Abbot himself). They basically ran the game after they dropped 36 Chambers.

Due to the large amount of group members (9 originally), 3rd party affiliations were bound to pop to ride the shaolin wave. We saw this with Sunz Of Man, Kill Army, Gravediggaz, etc. This introduced an often confusing side-cast of characters to say the least. One of these 90′s off-shoots was GP-Wu, a four man crew from the temple who were never “officially” sanctioned, but were accredited none the less.

Short for Gladiator Posse, the team first appeared on the first 2 projects by Wu’s youngest (affiliate) member Shyheim. They released one album, which did kind of poorly (to put it lightly), but they did had some gems. This is one of the joints I came across on a dig back in like ’98. I had heard the track on a college radio show, so I knew what I was in for. The track, Chamber Danger, is backed with a pseudo party joint called Party People. Chamber Danger is crazy dope though. I’ve included both joints here with the instrumental. They had another joint I was never able to track down on vinyl, but I posed the video below.
