Henri Chopin came to perform in Besançon in 1995 at Garage Caméléon the birthplace of Erratum Musical activities and the label. This place used to be a 300m2 garage where we lived, worked and organised noise performances and poetry actions from 1993 to 1998. When Henri Chopin arrived, he was 72 years old, calm and slow, and was delighted to meet a younger generation interested in sound art and electronic sound poetry experiments. He brought his tapes and we rented a powerful sound system that would be perfect to fill all of the space with his mouth noises. He then asked us to project the sound and follow his gestures concerning volumes and dynamic panning, and the resulting high pitch echos and feedback intensity along with the slowly melting speakers (audible here) gave him an incredible excitation and joy that we all could witness - and it was a contagious enthousiasm. Direct energy ! Henri Chopin was born in 1922, this LP is echoing his 100th anniversary and celebrates the passion he channeled and transmitted to many artists along his life and beyond.

Henri Chopin est venu à Besançon en 1995 au Garage Caméléon, lieu de naissance des activités d’Erratum Musical et du label. Les personnes investies étaient Michel Giroud (qui nous a fait rencontrer Henri Chopin et a fait publier “Poésie sonore Internationale”), Joachim Montessuis, Yvan Etienne et Masahiro Handa. Dans ce lieu de 300m2 nous avons vécu, travaillé et organisé des actions poétiques, performances et concerts bruitistes entre 1993 et 1998. Henri Chopin avait alors 72 ans, calme, lent et ravi de rencontrer une génération nouvelle qui s’intéressait à l’art sonore et à la poésie électronique expérimentale. Il apporta ses bandes, et nous avions loué une sono suffisamment puissante pour remplir la salle de ses bruits de bouche. Il nous a ensuite demandé de projeter le son en suivant ses indications gestuelles dynamiques concernant le volume et la balance. L’intensité résultante de ces sons percussifs amplifiés et perçés de souffles, d’échos et de larsens ainsi que les enceintes qui commençaient à craquer et fondre, tout cela lui procurait une joie et une excitation contagieuse dont nous avons été les témoins enthousiastes. Energie directe ! Plus tard en 2004 Henri Chopin nous a donné deux bandes à publier, la première pour le CD “La danse des tonneaux roulants et brisés” et la seconde était “Les gouffres des bronches sont des cavernes infinies”, qui a été diffusée pour la première fois sur France Culture en 2013 grâce à Thomas Baumgartner.
Henri Chopin est né en 1922, ce disque est en écho de son centième anniversaire et célèbre la passion qu’il a canalisée et transmise à différentes générations d’artistes tout au long de sa vie et au-delà.

REALITY (realityfilm.co.uk) had the honour of working with pioneering electronic composer Zbigniew Karkowski on two occasions. 
In 2007, as part of the Recording Angel Ensemble's accompaniment to Wojciech Has' film "The Saragossa Manuscript" at the National Film Theatre and finally, for the last time on the 31st October 2013 when, already gravely ill after learning 
that he had advanced pancreatic cancer, Karkowski premiered his music to the BBC 1954 teleplay production of George Orwell's "1984 - The Last Man in Europe" at London's Horse Hospital. It was to be his last public performance. 

Zbigniew died aged 55, just six weeks later on Thursday December 12th in the jungles of Peru where he had travelled seeking treatment with the Shaman healers of the Shipibo.

ZBIGNIEW KARKOWSKI - THE LAST MAN IN EUROPE - Extract 1

Charlemagne Palestine est né à Brooklyn et fait ses débuts dans une chorale juive. En 1962, il devient carillonneur à l'église Saint Thomas (Manhattan) et développe les premiers fondements de sa recherche sonore qu'il nomme le « son d'or » (« the golden sound »). C'est également à cette période qu'il fait ses premières expériences sur l'orgue de l'église unitarienne de New-York. Tony Conrad entend et apprécie son travail au carillon et l'introduit dans l'avant garde new-yorkaise, il rencontre ainsi La Monte Young, Terry Riley ou encore Philip Glass. Après plusieurs expérimentations sur bandes il poursuit ses recherches en musique électronique via les nouveaux synthétiseurs (et plus particulièrement le Buchla 100 et 200) grâce à sa rencontre avec Morton Subotnick en 1967. Dans le studio de Morton Subotnick le "New York University Intermedia Center", il produit de longues pièces créées à partir de sons continus jouant sur des intervalles micro-tonaux. Entre 1969 et 1970, Palestine déménage à San Francisco pour étudier et enseigner au CalArts. C'est dans cette université qu'il découvre les possibilités du Bösendorfer. Fasciné par la richesse harmonique de cet instrument il invente une technique qu'il nomme le "Strumming", héritière de sa pratique musicale sur carillon et synthétiseur. C'est également en Californie où il débute dans le monde de l'art en produisant ses premières performances, vidéos et sculptures. Là, il rencontre notamment la danseuse Simone Forti avec qui il entamera une collaboration. Durant les années 1970, ses performances l’amèneront à créer le concept de « Body Music ». Depuis, cet enfant terrible du maximalisme n’a cessé de se produire sur les scènes internationales et d’exposer son œuvre plastique dans les musées, galeries et centres d’art du monde entier. Il a également collaboré et enregistré avec Tony Conrad, Rhys Chatam, Pan Sonic, Scanner, Zev, Joaquim Montessuis et d’autres expérimentateurs sonores.
