Techno craftsman Andrei Morant holds a focus as sharp and abductive as his sound.  A paramount figure in the Houston underground since the early 90s, the North American artist also known as Jack Mackrel quickly established himself as a professional.  Morant started DJing in 1986, and only three years after his first gig in 1990, embarked on his production career.  Over 50 releases later, he is now recognized world round for his catalog of insurgent beats, and is featured on respected labels such as Planet Rhythm Records , Starkstrom Schallplatten, and Gynoid Audio.  Never faltering in his commitment to innovative techno, Morant unleashed a creature of his own machination – Scope Recordings.   His new label and recent production endeavors reflect his weighty history, as well as his knowledge of avant media and style, resulting in a finely tailored, powerful impression.

5 Questions Interview:

1.  You've been around as a DJ for a long time, starting in 1986.  What was the impetus for starting back then and what kind of music were you playing?       

I started playing the drums at a very early age, 3 or 4 years old i think, by the time I was 15 I had really gotten into dance music, being introduced to it by my older brother and his friends, they where avid clubbers and collectors of records. I basically became the resident d.j. at all of their house parties, which where about twice a week.  I was playing all the typical 80's dance tracks from the time.

2.  Fast forward 28 years and here you are, still at it.  In fact, this Studio Session you just played at a certain well known club in Berlin is clear evidence.  How was that show, and in all your time as a DJ, how does it rank?       

It was great, staff is extremely professional and accommodating. The crowd is intense and very responsive, everyone there dances their ass off!!  I will say that playing from 9 am till noon on a Sunday afternoon is a different experience all together.  As far as how I would rank it, man I really have no idea.  I've had so many great gigs over the years, it's really hard to make a list.  But it'd definitely be way up there.

3)  Being involved in DJing and producing Techno for as long as you have, are there times where you've ever wanted to walk away from it?       

Yeah, actually I have walked away twice.  The first time was in about 1993 I quit for about three years, I still dabbled in the studio but was not really active in the music scene. Then in 2004 I quit again, I had extremely busy years before and kind of got burnt out.  The lifestyle is a lot harder then most people imagine.  I think it's important to have a balance  between family life and your music career, and I feel now i can do it the way I want, take the gigs I want, make the music I want ,when I want to.  Music is not my career it's my hobby now and I have a lot more freedom and have a clearer head, no pressure.

 4)  What's your message to people when it comes to staying inspired and interested in all things Techno?         

For me it's just finding those tracks, you know the ones you hear and you say to your self "Well shit, back to the drawing board for me". Those are the thing that keep me inspired.  There are thousands of great techno producers out there and everyone of them is an inspiration to me.

5) Here at From 0-1 we are happy to have you on board as an artist, not only for this exclusive podcast, but also as a remixer for Milkplant's 'This is not Reality' 12" EP coming midyear.  Are there any other notable releases you have in the works you can leak to us right now?

Ha ha, you should have asked me two months ago, I had tons of releases , 'Falling Down' on my imprint Scope Recordings, and 'Density' also on Scope.  A great E.P. 'No Sterile Plans' on Take More Music, also I just had my debut release on Naked Lunch "Game Over".  A remix for DJ Shiva on Different is Different, remix for Unn on Teggno, pretty much all in the last 6 weeks. I do have about 4 E.P.'s I'm compiling for other labels right now but I can't really go into them. Oh! I'm returning to one of my my old label groups run by a very good friend of mine from the late 90's, currently working on some 133 bpm bangers that will be sure to "PUNISH" some dance floors. Very excited about that. All in all i can say that I am having a blast, and really excited about the future.

Protagonist status in one city is high praise indeed; holding key stakes in several is something else entirely. Something that Spanish born and Scottish bred Dave Tarrida can boldly claim. 

Tarrida’s timeline begins in 1991 in Edinburgh as founder and resident of the now legendary Sativa club. Here’s where Dave met Neil Landstrumm, Tobias Schmidt and Cristian Vogel, becoming a foursome that would continue to share gigs—the others live, Dave as DJ—and labels—like Tresor, Scandinavia, Mosquito and Sativae—for the first half of their respective careers. In 1994 the club bore Sativae Recordings, which Dave manned together with Steve Glencross, spawning the sibling Drought Records imprint two years later. Around the same time Dave took to the studio, though it would be another few more years before any records would materialise.

1999 was a turning point that saw Dave return to his native Barcelona, where he would spend the following eleven years honing his production craft and exceptional deck-side manner with local residences at Moog (which he still frequents today) and Nitza, as well as Stardust in Madrid. It was the same year that Tresor released his first solo record, ‘Postmortem Pop EP’, having debuted the year prior in collaboration with Tobias Schmidt on ‘The Test EP’. He produced two albums during this period: ‘Paranoid’ in 2001 for Tresor, and ‘Life’s a Glitch’ three years later—Sativae’s final record.

In 2010 Dave relocated again, this time to Vienna where he is currently based. After two decades of happily playing the role of DJ and promoter, 2013 sees Dave shift focus back on his own productions with the unveiling of a brand new label and pending releases for Housemeister’s soon-to-be re-launched All You Can Beat stable, and Funk D'Void’s Outpost Records. Saying that, he hasn’t quite hung up the headphones just yet. As the saying goes: you can take the DJ out of the club, but you can’t take the club out of the DJ—expect to see the name Dave Tarrida on many a flyer to come.

Lando and Xavier keep the coals hot after they first locked horns earlier this year. Power House Rhythm Unit, which landed in April on Facetoface, was gundam techno with feels; the EP namesake was a particular nerve-tingler, comprised of a sturdy 4/4 exoskeleton topped by an insistent, repeating vocal blurt.

"The Switch" manoeuvres along a similar trajectory: a raw machine driven house-techno hybrid. It's hypnotic and alluring in equal measure featuring a synth line that vaguely resembles Bob James' "Nautilus" opening.

The Switch EP is the eighth package to come from the TANSTAAFL PLANETS imprint. Catch the release on November 6th.
