Imagine Peanut Butter Wolf, Dam Funk, Prince Paul, Karriem Riggins, Rakaa Iriscience, LMNO, the Cypress Junkies, Jonwayne, & of course, the Beat Junkies all under one roof. Earlier this week our dude Dan Isenberg (@StanIpcus)  had the utmost privilege and honor of sitting with Primo at Headquarterz Studios (formerly D&D Studios) to talk in-depth about the creation of Gang Starr’s classic fourth album, and break down each of its songs track-by-track. 

We figured it was only right to provided yall with an original mix from our in-house DJ, The Vinylcologist (@TheVinylcologist) titled Hard to Earnstrumentals. The mix goes beyond highlighting the beats and samples on Hard to Earn, as over half of the album's instrumentals we're deconstructed and re-workings by Vinyl himself. In true UpNorthTrips fashion, we provided a dope collection of ill throwback pics and images to accompany the interview from our vaults.

The only 20 minutes we have of the fantastic live set of Sven Atterton at Hot Pony. Due to a power cut later on in the night the recording device corrupted the remaining wav file so that part of the night will just have to be remembered by those that were there.. what a great night it was! Sven was borrowing an old bass with old strings so he'd like it known that his bass playing is usually a lot better! It was also totally pitch black behind the decks! Enjoy! x

One of my favorite MC's of all time is Mos Def. The man was so damn fluid on the mic and actually cared about the things he talked about. A true poet. Growing up, it was very important for me to see people who were actually intelligent while still retaining that cool factor. I think many times in the black community, you equate a person being extremely well-read as either snobby and elitist or a straight sell-out with no self-awareness. Mos was able to shatter those misconceptions beautifully. The man is an award-winning actor, true mc, poet, and producer. And he does all of them with skill and a nobility. MOBB DEEP x ALCHEMIST - Built To Last Mix

This month marks the 25th anniversary of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's second (and final) full-length LP, 'The Main Ingredient.' Following in the footsteps of 1992's 'Mecca and the Soul Brother,' the album comprises tracks built from densely layered samples, frequently previously unsampled jazz fusion cuts mixed with crisp drums and short vocal snippets plundered from well-known '80s/'90s hip-hop tracks. Use of a number of go-to tracks defines the sound of the album and the presence of vocal samples from Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane in particular is a key ingredient in the album's sonic palette. In celebration of the album's 25th year, we've partnered once again with WhoSampled to present this mixtape of album tracks, alt versions, interview snippets, and of course original sample material, mixed by Chris Read.
