This is the opening of the recording from the Puniyatithi (memorial concert) for Ustad Shamsuddin Khan in 1968. It is going to be one of the finest authentic and rare tabla jugalbandis (duets) you will ever hear. Twins Shashi & Ravi were the first to introduce tabla Jugalbandi and Sawal Jawab (question and answer between the two artists in Hindustrani music). From a very young age in the early 1940’s they became two of the most sought after players of their time.

In the spring of 1969 Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and Pandit Taranath Rama Rao were returning from their first teaching trip to U.S. Z. M. Dagar had been at Wesleyan and Taranathji at Ravi Shankar’s school in L.A. if I remember right. Since I was learning from Taranathji and had stayed in the same house as Dagarsaheb in Chembur I invited them to stop by in Stockholm on the way back to India and managed to secure a few playing occasions for Swedish Radio and TV as well as a couple of concerts. One of them was a private concert in the atelier of the late Swedish painter Axel Törneman in Stockholm. The sound from the private concert is quite good and the music is of course wonderful so, we are happy to offer you their Raag Chandrakauns from this evening. - Bengt Berger

"The “archaeological digs” for the Vedbod tapes recently acquired a new urgency, and were further intensified after the sudden – too, too soon! – death in the autumn of 2010 of Kjell Westling. Yes – we had finally unearthed the tapes! the music, in general, sounded good. a little sound-technique polishing but no real editing was done to these findings, we kept the documentary approach preferring to keep too much rather than too little. Ah, this is how it could sound, once upon a time, in certain swedish realities."

Five years after their first album Piece in Peace we release Ori Variations with Elisabeth Gustafsson and Thomas Gustafsson, one more album for soprano saxophone and church organ. This time Thomas has written all the music. The words by Niklas Rådström from the last issue are still valid: "All around are to be found empty acoustic rooms and silent organ pipes waiting to be filled with new music. Churches are increasingly-important concert venues and with these pieces Elisabeth Engdahl and Thomas Gustafsson have created music to fill the vaults with sounds  to vibrate far beyond their walls."
