Tomas Otero's 'Can't Stop' EP is the third release from the young but well formed Volta label from Victor Ruiz. It features two originals and two remixes from Drunken Kong and Alex Stein.

The EP opens up with 'Can't Stop' which brings up dark serrated synths looping over the face of the tune as powerful techno beats drive below. Celestial keys bring some eeriness to this tense and tough cut.

Drunken Kong’s Remix of the main track then has a shuffling, all consuming techno groove with vast swathes of bass and pulsing synths. It shows why the Japanese dynamic duo have been on all top Techno DJ’s playlists.

'High Voltage' brings a more serene and spaced out feel thanks to the sustained chords that hang in the air above the rock solid kicks and an LFO led hook that makes this a B-side as solid as the A-track.

Closing the EP with majesty, Alex Stein brings a remix with some techno funk, lush loopy melodic patterns, high end sound design and more rolling drums. It’s peak-time anthem that rocks all dancefloors.

Berlin-based Ignacio Arfeli is next up on VOLTA Records with a four track EP of synth heavy and moving techno. A percentage of this label's profits go to charities and causes chosen by the artists that are involved.

Hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina and based in Berlin since 2019, Arfeli is a relative newcomer but with a mature sound that belies his age. His powerful sounds combine physical drums and heart-on-sleeve synth work and have come out on labels like Terminal M, We Are The Brave and Noir Music.

Opener 'Mo Machine' is twitchy future techno with unsettling synth pulses that keep you on edge. The laser-like synths and steely drums all work you into a state of hypnosis as the tension and texture builds to an intense peak. The superb 'Light And Darkness' is another melodic techno track with menacing drums and thunderous energy. A delicate vocal brings intense emotions around the physical groove then 'New Light' is another visceral and main room techno cut awash with cosmic melody. Lumpy drums and serene chords bring plenty of drama and last of all comes the terrific 'Talking to Whales.' This one has swirling, trance-like chords that will get hands in the air. An epic breakdown and chunky drum programming ensures maximum impact in the club.

Techno legend Christian Smith is back with his first EP at VOLTA. He takes care of the fifth EP with his usual compelling style. The Tronic label head needs little introduction as a mainstay of the underground for the past 20 years. There is little he hasn't done and now he shows he still has fresh sounds up his sleeve each time. One Giant Consciousness is an all consuming cut with rumbling kick drums and earth shattering bass. The hi hats are razor sharp and cosmic vocals add extra intergalactic energy. Dreamer then brings on a deeper sound with sustained chords hypnotising your mind. Martin Kinrus is a Producer, sound designer and DJ from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Backing up releases on Octopus Recordings, Set About, Phobos Records and several others, Martin now opens his account with Victor Ruiz’s burgeoning VOLTA imprint, delivering an impressive dose of energetic avant-garde techno prowess across four tracks that make up his ‘Cosmic Energy’ EP.

Leading with the title track, ‘Cosmic Energy’ is a pacy ethereal number with rippling bass tones and sweeping melodic textures from start to finish. Its hypnotic vocal hook and pulsating synths blend seamlessly into several atmospheric breaks and harrowing drops to carve out a gripping peak-time weapon. ‘Invincible’ comes next, bringing more interplanetary vibes from the outset. Another captivating exhibition of racy melodic-focused Techno crammed with gritty resonance and coarse electronic creativity, its tight drums and crisp percussive drive make the perfect match for its rich tapestry of musicality.

Romanian artist Tao Anra synthesises her hyperactive but sensitive personality into her music, playing from high energy to dark and groovy Techno. Her musical journey began in The Netherlands during her university years, following up with releases on 7Rituals, Kuukou Records and Kaligo Records. Tao now brings her ever-maturing Techno production to Victor Ruiz’s increasingly popular VOLTA imprint, with Ruiz himself joining Andra for a standout remix on ‘Gracias a la Vida’.

Kicking off with the title cut, ‘Gracias a la Vida’ dives straight into a flurry of racy grooves and blistering electronic musicality. Oozing with a blend of psy-inspired techno flavours from the outset - its fast-paced drums and driven hat sequences pave the way for an expanding platform of rifling bass notes and gritty synth leads that keep the energy at an explicit premium throughout. Victor Ruiz’s VOLTA imprint continues its impressive run of releases with another undeniably potent offering. This time featuring Lisbon-based Argentine Ignacio Arfeli, who returns to the label via superb releases on Terminal M, Analytic Trail, and We Are The Brave, his ‘Feel The Bass’ EP holds no prisoners and perfectly encapsulates the gritty and raucous sonics that VOLTA is fast becoming renowned for. Released on 14th July, Ignacio’s second outing on the label presents a trio of equally unique and ultimately gripping peak-time cuts.

Kicking off with the title cut, ‘Feel the Bass’ welcomes you with open arms to its driving drum grooves and rising lead arpeggios before cranking up the heat with sawing bass, ethereal plucked synths and intensified percussive propulsion.

‘Infinity’ comes next, bringing dark and moody vibes from the outset. Thudding kicks, shuffled hats, and a rippling bassline melody steers the track forwards through a continuum of eerie vocal injections and dynamic synth stabs, bringing a murky futuristic persona from start to finish.

‘Imagine’ completes the EP with an interestingly progressive twist. Starting with a more industrial format, focusing on harshened hats and warehouse-worthy drum work, it quickly develops into a high-octane mainstage stomper with pulsating synths filtering up from the depths of the mix accompanied by creative fills, orbiting sample shots, robotic vocals, laser FX and another massive ripping bassline.

Lisbon's VOLTA continue a slew of formidable dance tracks with a 3-track EP from Buenos Aires producer TimiR. Across releases on Gravity Records, Viventem and Renesanz - TimiR has already developed a clear and distinctive sound characterised by serrated bass synths and highly expressive percussion. His 'Dare' record lays out 3 cohesive by singular productions that build on this trope as they work to blend elements of Psytrance and Techno to striking effect.

The title track kicks off - here TimiR weaves an immersive tapestry as a menacing low end generates a kaleidoscopic tunnel while clever dynamics have LFO signals flicking sparks across the floor. Sharp, percussive breaks burst out and seize attention as they work to punctuate the flow of energy while a swooning vocal tops off an arresting production.

'Phantom' then follows up with sturdy sub work which lays a burly foundation for another dose of expressive flair from TimiR. More spectral vocals adorn a thorny branch of sound braided with explosive fills, raw, palpable synth signals and a warped melody that works as the driving force of the track.

'Switch' then finishes up with a clinic in dramatic sound design. Heavy subs and an arsenal of low-mid synths cascade alongside racing drums, forming another intricate base layer for a melody which blooms out with lucent colour, bringing another VOLTA coup to a close.

Marcu Rares’s original version of “Lunatique” is a masterpiece from the Romanian Minimal genre, which Tao Andra discovered on Youtube few years back and used to play in her Minimal sets. The two artists are from the same city in Romania and both have a background in Minimal, which made them connect instantly.

Last year, Andra approached Rares about the possibility of making her own version of the song and he immediately sent the parts. A year later, she finished it and this release became reality. 

The remix brings the energy of peak time techno while keeping the emotions and gentleness of the original, the ideal match to have on VOLTA. And a statement why Tao Andra is one to watch.
