Prior to the release of Deepchord’s 3rd full length on Soma, we are pleased to deliver yet another exclusive, limited edition picture disc in the form of 3 track ambient piece, “De Wallen”. This specially crafted EP is strictly limited to one vinyl only run and features photography by Rod Modell himself. 

De Wallen's layers of deep, swirling, metaphysical atmosphere and processed recordings of the area that it is named after, provide a sonic-photograph of Amsterdam's red-light district at 3am. Possibly the only soundtrack ever composed for this area. Otherworldly, and charged with a deep frenetic energy, this music presents an inter-dimensional portal into darker realms. Electromagnetic radiation etched into a piece of vinyl for phonographic dispersion. This is a unusual piece of "sound art" rather than merely electronic music, and has little (or nothing) to do with dance music's frivolity. Side B of this release reflects De Wallen's "sound art" aesthetic. "Prayer Wheel" is a generative-music life form (inspired by the night-sky and seaside) that expands, contracts, and mutates like a living organism. "Range Lights" is a luminescent sonic artefact, recently unearthed after years of being buried. The analog warmth and imperfections inherent of the vinyl format further the surreal nature of these artworks in a way that no digital format could reproduce. A new paradigm in "sound art". Immersive, shimmering, electro-mystical atmospheres that the adventurous sonic-traveller will find themselves often revisiting.

Rod Modell, aka Deepchord, returns to Soma Records with his 3rd full-length, this time exploring more ambient natures as he delivers his unique and mind melting soundscapes in ’20 Electrostatic Soundfields’.
With this album, Deepchord veers even farther away from the current trends in dance music with an assemblage of conceptual audioscapes culled from video-soundtrack and installation works made between 2008 and 2012.  This highly unusual collection contains immersive, introspective audio-sculptures more akin to musique concrète or electroacoustic music rather than dance, and exemplifies Modell's importance of developing a new sound in lieu of following popular trends. With some tracks clocking in at only 60-90 seconds, and practically nothing being dance-floor accessible, this album represents a truly unique electronica offering amongst the oceans of artists following a similar formulaic sound. Much of the album has an otherworldly, nocturnal feeling that would sit well in a David Lynch soundtrack. Sound collages comprised of alien-radio transmissions and Earth tones melded with lush electronic sounds and underwater atmosphere.  Modell's usual arsenal of studio hardware supplies the tonal food, but much of that is further processed with granular synthesis and arranged with generative-music techniques. Pieces like "Prayer Wheel" and "Seaweed" are set into motion and left to unfold organically without interference. "De Wallen" is from the Hash Bar Loops period and is a night time soundtrack for Amsterdam's Red Light District. It audibly mimics this area's quiet uneasiness... beautiful with undercurrents of activity not visible to the casual passer through. "Trompettersteeg" is similar in feeling, with its late-night field recordings made in the streets surrounding Amsterdam's Oude Kerk. "Raval", "Barcelona",and "Rooftop" contain atmospheric recordings made around Barcelona's El Raval district (a rooftop terrace on a rainy Barcelona night, recording sounds of traffic below and raindrops on an umbrella - in "Rooftop").  

The overall effect is darkly beautiful and ethereal. Metaphysical soundtracks from an alternate reality. A multifaceted listening experience that will reveal deeper layers with each subsequent pass. Soundfields that occupy a grey area where it's difficult to differentiate between electronic and organic tones. Timeless easy-listening for the techno-set, and incomparable to any other music. This is truly distinctive electronica.

An exclusive look into the mind of this contemporary artist. The DVD itself is a collection of Rod's film work. Straight off the back of ’20 Electrostatic Soundfields’ Deepchord delivers yet again with the double A-side ‘Prana/Tantra’. Deepchord leaves the ambient/beatless works of his latest album behind and gets brings his signature deep and dubby sound to these tracks. 

Prana glistens into existence as ethereal pads drift by, giving way to a subtle, almost deep house beat that pulses nicely, backed by tribal-esq percussion. A gently staccato synth pattern flutters in and out toying with the idea of techno ever so slightly yet keeping well within the realms of his usual sound. Simplicity is the key in this track and Deepchord allows it to evolve slowly and he toys with sweeps of reverb and FX giving the track a lush, organic sound.

Tantra gives off a tougher vibe than it predecessor. Gently layered, deeper, edgier synths open the track as percussive elements, swathed in FX form the basis of the groove. Bolstered by a typical Deepchord dubbed out bass line this track once again evolves perfectly almost without the listener noticing the subtle changes that give Tantra a deep and emotive flow.

Never one to sit still and be pigeon holed into a genre, Deepchord easily turns his hand once again a brings two beautifully crafted tracks in his own inimitable style

The deep, immersive echo chamber that sits at the centre of DeepChord’s signature work with Echospace may appear inspired by the genre-defining work of first-wave dub-technoists that appeared on the Chain Reaction label in the mid to late 90s. But it’s also work that’s quintessentially building upon the Detroit scene where it was born, and that divine marriage of roots and vision makes the work of Rod Modell and Steve Hitchell at once so highly considered, so timeless, and so pertinent. The distinguishing feature of the duo’s sound is its ability and willingness to stand still; whereas much of dub techno attempts to propel the listener forward in either a lover’s rock groove or the cushioned reverb of a driving beat, DeepChord’s synth-driven analog warmth trades not only in static ambience but also propulsive design. Their set at Métropolis in 2011 was nothing short of enveloping and transcendent.

Having steadily developed his sound over the course of the past 25 years, Deepchord’s (Rod Modell) intricate constructions and engrossing aural explorations have established him as a potent force in music production. It goes without saying that we are hugely honoured to have him on board at such a special time in the label’s history.

As a prelude to his highly anticipated Soma debut LP, Hash-Bar Loops, scheduled for release in early July, we present you with Amsterdam Remnants – an epic two track EP of what remains from his extended sojourn in the city. Whilst both tracks on the EP are not featured on the album itself, they retain the characteristic warmth, depth and stunning atmosphere of what lies therein.

First track Amsterdam Remnant 1 mixes up a spiralling blend of synthetic, layered harmonics, cloaking a deep, rhythmic percussive vibe. The depth of sound is truly staggering; subtle interference with underlying frequencies generates an entrancing experience which perfectly demonstrates the masterful control Modell is renowned for.

Amsterdam Remnant 2 swells and shimmers with the sound of rushing waves, held together by a solid, low frequency bass beat which rumbles and repeats. Descending sound patterns slowly rise from their filtered state into hypnotic, whirling beauty, striking a perfect balance of ambient luxury and lo-fi techno.

After completion of this material, Modell decided to ceremoniously give up the master cut to the murky depths of an Amsterdam canal as an act of gratitude to the city – “giving back to the place that inspired the music” – a self-effacing and sentimental gesture which perfectly reflects the deep thought and careful consideration put into this release. We can’t wait to let you hear it.

Soma mainstay Deepchord returns with part 2 of the Luxury Series. This Double A release feature Deepchord’s signature atmosphere rich tones and lush environments and also mark a slight upturn in terms of pressing on a more Techno vibe.

Luxury 3 opens as spacious as can be as the dynamic Modell crafts otherworldly pads and haunting tones, driven by muted kicks and driving subs. His effective use of delay and reverb knows no bounds as he subtly shifts synth stabs and background noise through the dimensional barrier, creating rhythms so refined they defy the natural law. His usual percussive wizardry is at work here that, whilst vigorous, retains a light atmospheric feeling keeping fully in line with the melancholic tones of the track. Clocking in around 14minutes, this is Modell as his most immersive.

Luxury 4 has a distinct Detroit heart to it. Those almost instantly recognisable saw waves, moulded by layers upon layers of processing, swirls and evolve and Deepchord slowly works in various elements of the track to unparalleled levels. Fairly reminiscent of earlier, more stripped work, subtle percussion brings things to life fairly quickly as Modell allows the layers of ethereal synths and processing to blend and fuse naturally, creating a cohesive background to which the listener can easily spend hours listening to, every time finding ever so slight nuances to each cycle of the track.

Deepchord never fails to impress with every release and can easily change his style up from previous incarnations based in pure atmospherics to his own unique brand of legendary Dub Techno

Rod Modell (a.k.a. Deepchord) is a sound-designer with 25 years’ involvement in electronic music and over 50 releases under various aliases and styles. Beginning with more industrial and ambient forms of sonic experimentation, he worked with Kim Cascone and his -then- record label Silent, and performed along-side notable industrial acts such as Chris & Cosey and SPK. While attending Art School for Photography, Rod lived in Detroit’s Eastern-Market area, the location of the infamous ‘Techno Boulevard’, and home to Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson during that time. Submersed in the blossoming Detroit Techno scene (early 1990′s), a journey from a more experimental sound into Detroit’s techno-world was inevitable. Modell then co-founded the Deepchord record label in Detroit during the mid-90′s. Many consider Deepchord to be the second wave of the Basic Channel sound, and came years before the onslaught of imitators. 
After 16 releases on Deepchord, Rod went onto co-found Echospace. Echospace released two full-length albums and five 12″ singles on Modern Love (Boomkat), and a slew of releases on their Echospace imprint. 2007′s ‘The Coldest Season’ and 2010′s ‘Liumin’ are critically acclaimed electronic music classics, and were on top-lists of prestigious resources such as The Wire, xlr8r, and Resident Advisor (who wrote of The Coldest Season: “in terms of sheer quality, it rivals Basic Channel’s vaunted catalog. Put down that ultra-rare Basic Reshape 12” and check out what’s going on now. This album is bound to be one of the most fully realized listening experiences to grace your stereo this year, and is proof positive that DeepChord and Echospace are the rightful heirs to the dub techno legacy”). Rod also operated an audio-mastering facility in the Detroit area from 1995-2005, employing his services to many electronic record labels, including Richie Hawtin’s M-NUS imprint.

Rod’s idea of an album revolves around a concept that isn’t always followed in modern day electronic long players. A chain of feelings and emotions emanate from his work and flow in a manner that has been very carefully considered. Buzzing in atmospheric warmth and layered with mesmerising rhythms, ‘Hash-Bar Loops’ tells the tale of a hazy extended stay in Amsterdam, where the album was in the most part formed.

Starting from deep and dreamy soundscapes the album warms from the outset with the opener, Spirits. The underlying atmosphere is somewhat disconcerting, but balances perfectly with soft, distant chords and ever-evolving percussion. The album progresses through turbulent synths and outlying melodies in Sofitel & Merlot. On Tangier, stabs and textures melt into one another adding tension and dynamics in true Deepchord style. The swirling air of Electromagnetic then conveys a dizzying and hypnotic feel in which budding chords emerge from a white-washed DC soundscape. Balm steps into another world, with beautiful hovering chords that pulse throughout the track, forming a delicate and emotive shape. The climactic Oude Kerk sits at the peak of this album and deserves its crown. Arguably the most exposed of all tracks in the album, Oude Kerk fizzles end to end, letting the deep low frequencies and advancing percussion take over. City Centre then reels the synths back in, with contemplative pads that are underpinned with arguably the heaviest sub-bass on the album. Field recordings can once again be heard, hidden deep in the layers of sound in Crimson and Black Cavendish, where their dense sonics slowly swell behind metallic clangs. Closing the circle, Neon and Rain steps back into the deep and wistful soundscapes heard at the opening of the album where the familiar sense of unease and contemplation toy with one another.

In our 20th anniversary year we count ourselves truly fortunate to be able to release music we love this much.

“The relationship between Pulshar and Rod Modell goes back to 2008, when Echospace (Rod & Stephen Hitchell) remixed Nospheratu, a track included in the album Brotherhood (Phonobox, 2008).

This release would go on to foster a friendship that went beyond just music. When Rod travelled to Barcelona, he’d always catch up with Pablo and Sergio to chat and walk around the Raval, making the obligatory stop in Bismilla Kebabish of Joaquín Costa. During these visits, the idea to work on more than just remixes together came up. The collaboration birthed Undercover, a conceptual EP of 5 tracks (digital release) and 3 on vinyl. One song, 5 covers.

Undercover speaks to sound’s affect on emotions. Like waves in the ocean, each unique track comes from the same source. From the strongest and most powerful waves of a storm to the quiet and gentle tides, this is forty-seven minutes of pure pleasure. The feeling of this release is abyssal, dark and very organic, and it takes you on a very special underwater journey aboard Verne´s “Nautilus.”
