Arii Shokyu-Ni was a haiku poetess during the Edo period who began a wandering life after running away from her husband at 29 with the haiku poet Kohaku. Just like Matsuo Basho, "the Nun Shokyu" traveled to the Deep North of Japan.

Ian Ring - Opus Arcana - 17 - Star

I find it difficult to predict how others will react to my works. I thought that the last piece I wrote, Piano Trio, was a dark and unsettling composition only to have people tell me that they pictured peaceful nature scenes.

I think Circus Dreams, my second piano solo, is a bit eclectic, with references to jazz, musicals and pop. I imagine the music as accompanying the acts in a small circus, while not actually imitating circus music. The themes transition in unexpected ways as things do in dreams.

I would love to hear your impressions.

There was of course that summer night when Johann Sebastian Bach lied down on his back, looked up at the sky, and let his mind bring him back to his early childhood in Eisenach when his parents were still alive and he lived with them and all of his siblings, and he felt whole again for a few minutes. (Johann lost his parents at the age of 9.) That night, his little prelude BWV 999 might have played in his mind and, although it did not sound like this, it may have felt something like this.
