Books and Beyond: Hēmi Kelly - A Māori Phrase a Day

To mark the 60th Anniversary of Samoa's Independence in 1962, the Archive of Māori and Pacific Sound presents rare recorded songs from the League of Samoa, known as O le Mau a Samoa – or Mau in short.

The Mau was a non-violent movement for Samoan political independence from New Zealand colonial administration during 1920-1935. Their efforts would ultimately result in the political independence of Samoa in 1962.

Mau means ‘resolute’, ‘unwavering’, and denotes ‘firm strength’ in Samoan. The motto for the Mau were the words Samoa mo Samoa, meaning ‘Samoa for the Samoans.’

Historians recall their use of singing to rally support, create and sustain a sense of group identity, and ridicule the opposition.

Listen to recorded songs of the Mau from the 1940s that were dubbed from New Zealand Broadcasting Service 78 rpm discs by Dr Richard Moyle during a trip to Samoa in the 1960s.

Ngā Kākano: Pacific Curatorial Practice through Teu Le Vā

Huni Mancini is a writer and archivist at the Archive of Māori and Pacific Sound. In Capturing the Airs she looks at some of the collection items she works with that enliven songs and cultural practices from around the Pacific.

Capturing the Airs was published by Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu in Bulletin B.214, December 2023. It was commissioned to support the exhibition Spring Time is Heart-break: Contemporary Art in Aotearoa. Throughout the exhibition storytelling emerges as a strong theme, as the artists ask us to share meaningful experiences that relate to the current moment and the challenges we face. All the contributors to this issue of Bulletin have been selected to speak to some of these wider ideas, thinking about how we communicate with each other – through sound and language – and also moments where this communication might fail.
