in computing, hyperscale refers to architectures and systems that can be scaled as demand increases or decreases. this is often applied to big data or cloud computing applications, but the terms are carried into the physical realm, as hyperscale data centers are constructed following the same principles of scalability.

this is a stereo recording of a generative multichannel sound installation.

server songs is a performative archive and a generative choir of real and synthetic voices. songs from the depths of the servers, songs about life lived on and through the internet.

the installation presents an experiment with performative database access offering glimpses in to the vast amounts of media stored on public servers, with emphasis on curated personal stories from mainstream internet as well as more esoteric timelines and the othernets.

this is a work in progress. it is possible to join the database; through conversation and donation. if you have a story to share, i would love to talk and possibly record you for the archive. a website for the project, where it is possible to get in touch and share stories is now live on https://www.serversongs.me. over time this website will be expanded to give better access to the ever expanding archive.

Geoacoustic Sediments

In 1977, when the legendary Belgian psychoacoustician Ernest Canular disappeared, he left a large collection of 1/4" tapes. What exactly these tapes contain has been subject of debate. Canular dedicated the last 7 years of his life to developing techniques for recording geoacoustic sediments in the chalk layers of the cliff of Møn.

Only with the aid of recently developed digital restoration techniques, has it become possible to play back the information on the tapes on a spectrum, which is audible to the human ear. This audio file is a digitalization of the tape which was in Canulars recorder, the day he disappeared. The recorder was found by the marking placed by Abildgaards Fald, south of Hylledals Slugt.

Da den legendariske Belgiske psykoakustiker Ernest Canular i 1977 forsvandt, efterlod han sig en større samling 1/4" spolebånd. Hvad der optræder på Canulars optagelser, har ligesom hans forskning, været genstand for debat. Canular dedikerede de sidste 7 år af hans liv på at udvikle teknikker til at optage geoakustiske aflejringer i Møns klints kalklag.

Først ved nyligt udviklede digitale restaurations teknikker er det lykkedes at afspille båndene i et spektrum, som er hørbart for det menneskelige øre. Denne lydfil er en digitalisering af det bånd, som sad i Canulars optager den dag han forsvandt. Optageren blev fundet ved markeringen der er placeret syd for Hylledals Slugt, ved Abildgaards Fald.

In collaboration with Gustav Johannes Hoder "Music on a Long Thin Wire" was presented as a sleep concert in Main Stage Mimer Larven at Nordberg Festival, from friday night 02:15 until 10:00 in the morning saturday.

The wire was suspended in space over the 200 sleeping festival guests, audio generated on oscillators and virtual modular synthesizers setups, were modulated ever so slowly over
the full 8 hours of the performance.

This is a small sample of audio recorded with a Zoom H2N Recorder inside Mimer at around 5:00 AM.
