Sex Swing have long been one of this site’s favourite groups, so we’re happy to announce that we’re releasing their blazing self-titled debut album via tQPC on Friday 25th November. 

Sex Swing are the British underground supergroup that shouldn’t even exist. One member has survived a plane crash. One has survived (and won) a chess/boxing match against an opponent with the (entirely deserved) nickname ‘The Finnish Hammer’. Another has survived being struck by lightning. And one has even survived jumping out of a moving train straight into an industrial trouserpress full of cobras. (Actually we made the last one up, but the others are 100% true.)
 
But survive they did, to bring you an album which is like a heady combination of Suicide, Joy Division, The Thing, Brainticket, Motorhead, Harmonia and “Third-era Portishead tweaking on brown acid” (according to Clash magazine). 

For those of you yet to have the pleasure, Sex Swing comprises Tim Cedar (keyboards), formerly of Ligature, who fronts Part Chimp and runs Dropout Studios in Camberwell; Jason Stoll (bass), a member of both Liverpool psych champions Mugstar and Bonnacons of Doom while also running God Unknown Records; Colin Webster (sax) is involved with a plethora of free jazz projects (including Dead Neanderthals) and releases many of them through his Raw Tonk label; Dan Chandler (vocals) sang in the masterful Dethscalator and Stu Bell (drums) played in the same and Gin Palace, while newest addition Jodie Cox (guitar) currently also plays with Seattle drone metal overlords Earth. 
 
The LP is a rising epiphany of carnal sonic force that spangles one into submission by dint of its gleeful and cleaving weight, the record places the band at the forefront of the darkest and heaviest end of noisy avant psych. Imagine some hellish pan dimensional Krautrock marching band clad in ill fitting, bong water and Buckfast splattered, suits fronted by David Yow, conducted by a wildly inebriated Conny Plank and waved along by Jus Oborn and Dik Mik and you’re still not quite there. This is music that doesn’t so much ebb and flow as trounce and mangle. Boasting a staggeringly, hellishly, loud production job by Joel Eaton, Sex Swing is about primal animal body sonics.
 
As Quietus editor John Doran states: "When I first saw Sex Swing live it was like diving headfirst into a white hot volcanic vent and then being instantly vapourised by everything true, righteous and sublime about music. After the gig there wasn't even any discussion about it. Luke and I immediately decided we had to put their debut album out."

In Heldon nobody particularly likes liner notes. However, although the groups’ albums have none they abound, from the very beginning, with clues and often cryptic references. The name of the group, obviously, comes from a science fiction novel by Norman Spinrad, but perhaps it is less well known that the title of the album Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale (1976) is taken from a pirate recording of King Crimson made in 1974, an elegant way to state the possible lineage between guitarist (and synthesizer player) Richard Pinhas and Robert Fripp, his peer in the British band. Likewise, Richard Pinhas values the philosophers Lyotard, Nietzsche and Deleuze (whose lessons he followed at Vincennes), and the cover of Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale quotes another intellectual, Pierre Klossowski, a theology specialist, according to whom all creators owe it themselves to provoke a “state of insecurity straying from the oppressive regime of mediocrity”, words which could be considered as a mission statement for Richard Pinhas!
Having been a precursor of the home studio, Richard Pinhas came to the Davout studios to record the fifth Heldon album Un Rêve sans conséquence spéciale originally released in 1976 on the Cobra label. He had a special space reserved for him, where there was a Moog 3 which had belonged to Paul McCartney.
Intense, violent, bitter, abrasive, uncompromising: the first on-site recording is in keeping with the four predecessors, prefiguring both Industrial- and post-rock, showing once again that the early references to “guerrilla electronics” (and to William S. Burroughs) were not in vain! The newcomers to this universe, bassist Didier Batard (Cœur Magique, Triptyque), on one track, and drummer François Auger (heard on the fifth album by Gérard Manset) finally transform Heldon into a fiery power trio for the inspired “MVC II”. Without forgetting that the faithful Patrick Gauthier is also on board, as is Jannick Top (Magma), each on one track.
Listening to the result it is easy to understand why Merzbow, Wolf Eyes and Oren Ambarchi, in the 2000s wanted to record with Richard Pinhas! It must also be noted that the often-made comparison between Heldon / Richard Pinhas and King Crimson / Robert Fripp, while still pertinent, is insufficient, as Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale breaks much new ground beyond those horizons.
