Zygmunt Day & Echo Pressure follow up last year’s full-length, “On Streets That Know,” with their new Ep, “No Hood, No Dogs, No Food, No Drink”. The band, which also includes drummer Joe Hyam, guitarist Giancarlo Grasso and bassist Nathan Kerntiff, recorded the EP in Madrid at Mr. Soul Estudio with engineer David Hyam, Joe’s cousin, in the heat of July 2014. 

Once again, the band’s music addresses the difficulty and hopefulness of the UK’s current way of life. This time the band embraced more streamlined arrangements than the folk/drone of their debut album, drawing on rock, samba, disco and jazz rhythms. The new sound was made possible by the wealth of equipment available at Mr. Soul Estudio – a fully functioning Hammond organ and Leslie speaker, Wurlitzer and Rhodes electric pianos, a Yamaha upright, a beautiful vintage Gretsch drumkit and a wealth of guitars, basses, amps and microphones. 

The playing on the record showcases the newfound tightness of a band with a years’ gigging and practicing under their belts, capable of fleshing out Zygmunt’s songs and adding nuance to the arrangements. Given a professional environment in which to record, the band were able to stretch their wings and push their sound into new places, which can be seen in the expansiveness of “Find A Way Back Over” and the ever-shifting arrangement of “There Was A Person”. 

“The idea for these songs is that they would be long, but constantly changing in small ways, so that the same part is never played with the same arrangement twice,” says Zygmunt, “our aim was for the songs to evolve, so that by the end, they have arrived somewhere different from where they began – but are recognisably still the same. This reflects what they’re about – being caught in a constant way of life, but longing for change, thinking about it from different angles, and trying to make your peace, whether with the past, the present or the future. “ 

“That said, there is also a song on there about pulling your best friend’s ex-girlfriend and having to cancel the holiday you were due to go on together because it’s too awkward now.” 

The EP also features two spoken-word tracks recorded by Zygmunt in London, and once again features saxophone parts by Joe Murgatroyd, including the bonkers solo on the full-length version of “Mr. Sol,” and backing vocals from Sophie Jamieson. 

The EP was mixed by Tim Kramer and Zygmunt, and mastered by Mike Hillier.

Friday, I leave site and head home on a sticky bus to wash the dust off in the shower. People are fanning themselves with magazines and staring out the window, at the bright sun light hitting pavements, trees and car windscreens.

It’s a leaving do for one of the lads, so at home I spray myself with aftershave and put a shirt on. A girl I know from school is having a party later on as well, and we’ve been texting recently. I think she’s probably just a friend for now, but it’s summer, and I’m single, and to some extent, all bets are off.

Well all the boys are at a pub in Spitalfields, and Shoreditch is buzzing. We drink Heineken and talk about shagging. Girls walk past wearing summer dresses, and we laugh at videos on each other’s phones. After some arm wrestling, we go to sing karaoke at a place in Farringdon, but we’re all pissed up, and we end up smashing glasses everywhere, spilling tequila on ourselves and taking off our trousers. It’s all good fun when the blood is up, and we all sing Angels by Robbie Williams with as much passion as possible before our hour is up and we all get kicked out by the bouncers.

But outside there’s a fight between two of the boys who split a gram – they grab each other by the throats and shove each other against the railings. Of course we all try not to take sides, and eventually we break it up, But neither of them will back down and suddenly we’re all divided. Everyone scatters on to trains and buses, and for most of them the night’s already over. Two of the boys say they’re going to carry on in Camden, but it’s too far for me, so I text the girl to say I’m coming to her party up in Islington.

But by now it’s a different town 
Drunk middle class kids on the night bus,
And men who stop me to ask if I want to buy cocaine.
Whilst the drainpipes drip on me,
And foxes hiss at me from alleyways;
A queue at the kebab shop,
And stumbling tramps, with cans of Super Tennants, kissing in the street.

I breathe it in, I’m part of it now,
And eventually I get to the big white house, where the party is in full swing.
I swim through the swinging faces, til I see her in the kitchen,
And she smiles at me and takes me by the hand towards a table stocked with beer.

Later on, when I’m kissing her,
I keep thinking about her at school –
All the possibilities, and everything we could have been, before our lives started to fill up the blanks where we used to have a future.
Our lips are dry
And to be honest, I’m too drunk, and too tired, to do anything properly, but it’s nice just to be there.
Eventually we both fall asleep, her with her head on my chest, me with my arm around her waist, and I don’t wake up again until the morning.

In the morning she says nothing,
And I know what she means.
I’ve already given up on most of my dreams.
I just want to wake up in a bed with clean sheets,
In a room with a window,
That looks out on trees.

We go and get breakfast together,
And I feel comprehensively hungover.
But we have a nice chat, and it’s clear we’ll probably both just forget about the night before.

We say goodbye,
And before I get on the bus home, I buy one of those 35p energy drinks that you always see labourers and homeless people drinking.
It doesn’t make me feel any better,
And once I read the ingredients,
I conclude that it will probably give me cancer.

„I keep asking myself where they take all that brilliant music from. It’s just as if somebody had poked a bees’ nest and then it all burst out. I feel deeply connected to the Pampa Style..." (Terry Hogann, The Musical Mistress, 10/2010).

As was to be expected, Pampa is steadily developing into a platform for cross-border electronic dance music. Each Pampa release sounds different from the previous and still Pampa remains a conclusive musical planet. This is all the more surprising in the case of PAMPA005, which features two completely different artists: 

Side A: Nathan Fake - Xmas Rush
Having reportedly recorded his track „Xmas Rush“ in his London studio during a jam session, Nathan Fake (Border Community, Traum, SAW) has turned in a total brainfuck. It’s mercylessly exaggerated, psychedelic, inexorable, and at the same time sweet and heart-warming. A very rare mixture. Unique in its consistency, we haven’t heard anything like it since the 90s. It’s so nice and overwhelming to have your ears exercised the right way again. Evergreen... 

Side AA: DJ Koze pays tribute to Michael Smith - "Mi Cyaan believe it"
In the meantime, DJ Koze has moved on to completely different spheres. Once again, he astonishes his public with an extremely danceable version of Michael Smith’s "Mi Cyaan Believe It". Having originally started off as a digital error, and recorded within a single night, this tune recalls the ruthlessness, rawness and revolutionary energy of Public Enemy. You can literally see SW1 deploying on the balcony of Amnesia, shitting down diarrhea. The rough and dry beat sets the perfect scenery for the breath-taking lyrics by Michael Smith, the great dub poet, who was tragically beaten to death by political opponents in Jamaica in 1983 (the incident sadly occurred on Marcus Garvey's birthday), alongside Linton Kwesi Johnson, and Mutabaruka, who was one of the most well-known dub poets.
