On “Pray,” Kendrick Lamar reflects over “the voices of art” and personifies a song by Michael Jackson and a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr., respectively. In each of the first two verses, Lamar mentions two dates that relate to the lives of each man—The Jackson 5’s “ABC” released on February 24, 1970, and MLK delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech on August 28, 1963.

The piano sample comes from a 1979 song called “Say A Prayer” by T-Fire.

Kendrick uses every verse to explore how the media is quick to dismiss an artist’s contributions to society due to their personal shortcomings—he specifically delves into Jackson’s pedophilia accusations and King’s marital infidelity. In the final verse, Kendrick establishes that artists bring meaning to the world regardless of their individual imperfections.

The song was recorded sometime in 2019. Leaked on August 18th, 2020, under the name “Prayer”, however it was only ever titled “Pray” and “Mr. Morale”. Ultimately scrapped due to being leaked along with “Gotta Love Me” and “Somebody.”. Also mistakenly thought to be an original version of “The Heart Part 5”.

Lyrics for the song were present on Tidal for “Mr. Morale” when the song first released before being changed. Zaytop claimed that this was meant to show up on the album as the title track but it was replaced with the version produced by Pharrell.

Wie hieß es bei Monty Python doch gleich: „And now for something completely different“. Passender könnte man die Vorstellung unserer neusten Podcast-Ausgabe nicht einleiten, denn etwas „komplett anderes“ erwartet den Hörer.

Es ist gar nicht so einfach, die richtigen Worte für den Künstler, dem wir dieses außergewöhnliche Set zu verdanken haben, und seinen Sound zu finden. Vielen wird http://soundcloud.com/paul-valentin vermutlich ein Begriff sein, denn seine „Valium“-Reihe gibt es nun schon seit 2010 zu hören. Sie zeichnet sich durch eine sehr seltene Einzig- und eben Andersartigkeit aus. Das erreicht Paul Valentin sicher durch die mehr als ungewöhnliche Trackauswahl, bei der auch mal reine Instrumentalstücke, die gar nicht aus dem elektronischen sondern eher aus dem klassischen Bereich kommen, verwendet werden. 

Generell spürt man bei seinem Sound die Liebe zu klassischen Instrumenten, so kommen sie auch sehr häufig in seinen Produktionen zum Einsatz. Man bekommt das Gefühl, hier entsteht wirklich noch größtenteils handgemachte Musik. Und deshalb entwickelt sich beim Hören immer der Eindruck von besonderer Tiefe, Emotionaltät und Authentizität. Besonders freut uns, dass er dies in unserem Podcast mit zwei bisher unveröffentlichten eigenen Tracks unter Beweis stellt, die es bis zum Erscheinen der EP später in diesem Jahr vorerst nur hier zu hören geben wird. Aber auch ansonsten haben seine Tracks schon den Weg in zahlreiche Sets gefunden; seine Remixe von Jonas Kimmelmann und Hannes Smith seien hier nur als Beispiele genannt.

Freut euch also auf ein Set, welches einfach wunderschön anders ist. Es ist zwar kurz aber dafür um so intensiver. Und es lädt ein zum Augenschließen, Davontreiben, Eintauchen und sich verzaubern lassen!

Over the years, he has refined a collection of music imbued with the distinct taste of his European realm. Now, residing in the distillery of cultures that is Aotearoa New Zealand, he concocts harmonious brews that enthrall listeners at large and small gatherings; clandestine woodland rendezvous; thundering, pitch-black basement blowouts, light-speed gigs aboard gleaming spaceships, and even interdimensional celestial soirées. He has become a familiar face at XCHC, Ōtautahi Christchurch, both behind the turntables and on the dance floor, and is a cornerstone in the mysterious outfit known as Mary Hush.
David Juno is a sonic conduit, channeling the energies of spectators and dancers, linking them to the symphony of sensations, emotions, and the cosmic tide that characterizes the human odyssey. His sets oscillate between the blackest voids of space and the blinding brilliance of distant supernovae, with all the celestial nuances in between.
