An intriguing triptych which demonstrates the mastery of balance and harmonic colours with a high sense of formal structuration (soloists dialogue versus sound mass). The marimba's 'obsession' is quite funny and original. I wonder if you know the researches by Gloria Coates on string glissando effect ; I think you should exploit more this dimension in your music (but of course it's still a subjective view). Thank you for your precious sharing !

Utsyo, I detect a reference to Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre in the use of the marimba! These are very fine pieces and you again show your mastery of sound texture.

Chine was the younger sister of Mukai Kyorai, the author of last week’s poem. Together the siblings kept a journal during a trip from Kyoto to the Ise shrine in 1686. Kyorai’s Ise Journal begins as follow:

 

    The sun hot yet wind cool on our heads,
    I take my younger sister on a pilgrimage to Ise.

Chine died in 1688, at 26. The haiku of the week is Chine’s death poem.

My Birthday has become a day of so many mixed emotions. On the same day I lost my beautiful cousin, Zoe but also welcomed a new nephew to the world. This track is dedicated to those who have lost so many friends, family and loved ones. Always remembered and never forgotten x

My "Three Instances for Orchestra" were composed rather quickly, between late March and early May of 2021. A suite of three miniature tone poems (one of the reasons I call them "Instances"), it is scored for a relatively small orchestra, having single winds, two horns, trumpet, trombone, 4 percussionists (playing marimba, vibraphone and a variety of unpitched percussion instruments) and a small contingent of strings. 

"Duos and Trios" consists of a single melody fractured into a number of fragments, which are then layered one on top of the other. The texture is characterized by duos and Trios of winds, brass and percussion playing at a time with a halo of string playing. 

"Calls" is a triptych in itself. The first section features some bird like figurations from the individual wind players. The second section has two layers: duos of solo strings with brass and winds along with a steady, yet slightly offset rhythmic pattern played by the percussion. The third section brings back material from the preceding music and ties them together into a short coda. 

"Shadows" is a slow, meditative piece with a focus on textures which can be created by various combinations of instruments in the orchestra. Although one can find many similarities in gesture with the previous movements, there is an individual voice in this piece which makes it serve as an apotheosis to the suite. It looks back reflectively on what has elapsed before.

I walk into the night
the night is so beautiful

the night where everything ends

In the course of time
the time we had left
nothing remained as it was
was only illusion

there was no reality
reality .... all only dreams
dreams and fantasies of joy
joy that passes too quickly in the night
the night is over
the end is true
the truth is over

in the course of eternity
eternally alone
alone at the edge of the jungle
the jungle of the city
a city that never sleeps
I have slept away
me and my music
music that saves me
saved in the core
the core that holds me
held by compresses
compresses around the heart
a heart of this night
the night that never ends
an end without meaning
there is no sense
