Henning Mankells Kriminalromane, allein in seinem Heimatland über 3,5 Millionen Mal verkauft, wurden bislang in über 30 Sprachen übersetzt, sogar ins Japanische. Die Berühmtheit des Skandinaviers basiert auf der Figur des charismatischen Ermittlers Kurt Wallander. Entsprechend erfolgreich war die 13-teilige Verfilmung der Wallander-Krimis mit Krister Henriksson in der Titelrolle, die seit 2006 im Ersten ausgestrahlt wurden. Nun hat der für seine Shakespeare-Darstellungen berühmte Kenneth Branagh sich an eine Neuinterpretation der Kultfigur gewagt. Das ist ein Gipfeltreffen der besonderen Art, denn der Gegensatz zwischen dem Energiebündel Branagh und dem notorisch übermüdeten Wallander, der sich mit viel Kaffee über den Tag rettet, könnte kaum größer sein. Als Meister der minimalen Gesten spielt der in Belfast geborene Wahlengländer den schwedischen Kommissar mit britischer Zurückhaltung. Dank einer präzise getimten Spannungsdramaturgie sind die neuen Wallander-Adaptionen ein Highlight für Krimifans.
