“For nearly two years our cities, which were once teeming with life, have become liminal spaces. Even Detroit, a place physically shaped by human departure, feels increasingly empty.

I can’t help being reminded of all the other liminal spaces that frame my early memories - the dusty hallways at school, an empty pool drained during a long winter, the doctor’s office waiting rooms that always smelled like anxiety. There’s a nauseating sense of the past echoing into the present, of the nostalgia and dread of childhood re-entering into the vacuum of our current lives.

This is a difficult feeling to turn into a “techno album”, as it has few obvious connotations. In my approach to the piece, I knew I couldn’t rely on melody, because the emotions it provokes are often too obvious to accurately capture this concept. The experience of liminality is intangible; there’s a sense of vague familiarity that is slightly out of reach. Instead, I incorporated field recordings and mangled sounds from the real world. It’s an album that relies on a sense of physical space, but a space you can’t quite put a name to. A space that feels familiar, but you’re not sure why.

The project is made whole by the evocative artwork of Ryote, who brings the themes together in a unique visual style. The beautifully printed vinyl sleeve represents the three aspects of liminality; physical, mental, and digital, and ties them together with the music contained within.”

47030 mines the depths of miasmic, melancholic techno with an EP from up-and-comer Quelza.

French producer Quelza, otherwise known as Léo Naïtaïssa, is a fresh face in Berlin's music scene and an increasingly in-demand name on the international club circuit. As a DJ and a producer, he's made a name for himself as a craftsman of sophisticated dance music. His fifth solo following a full-length on Mord earlier this year, 47030 represents the apotheosis of his work thus far, mining new territory in the realm of hypnotic, soul-summoning techno and cantankerous breakbeats.

The five sci-fi-indebted songs that make up the EP open with "La Gloria"—a stripped-down club track that sets a webwork of sweeps against a roving female vocal line. The A-side intensifies in the following two cuts; where "Obliteron '' casts deep and dub-inflected ravines, "Valkarr" moves at a more feverish pace, offsetting a frenetic groove against spare counter-rhythms. The flip side carries the EP's glitched-out sonic motif through a series of pulverizing granular contortions before dispersing into a disembodied chorus of panning microtonal oscillations and harmonic wails. It's "Nectar," a 164 BPM break, that ties this EP to the distinct 47 stylistic canon, jackknifing the EP to a drum & bass-inflected close. The entire package will be available for purchase on September 9th, 2022.

PWCCA returns home in our new physical release with his trademark sound, always focusing on a futuristic and sharpened point of view. He is undoubtedly one of the most prolific actors in the techno scene always searching on new expression channels thru electronics. This extended EP provides us with six pieces, with two ambiental interludes alternated with four danceable experiments, rugged, precisely distorted and abstract. After the dreamy Intro, Unreal Element moves on to undiscovered territories with a relentless exercise made of rhythmical components spiced with expertly crafted textures. On Unnatural Register he swaps obscurity for space travels in a bleepy and alien cut while Unexpected Result goes phrenetic again, raising the tempos and relying on repetitive synth lines with adrenaline as the main message. Irregular Frequencies is the next exercise, combining sci fi with distortion and industrial flavors on a perfect hybrid. After the dance floor hysteria Outro says goodbye in a floaty mood. Expertly designed dancefloor tools and weapons for those in search of excellence.

Caustic, dense and centred around complex but exquisitely executed percussive motifs and driven, rising sequences - many would argue an alliance between Shifted’s heady, monochrome recordings and Lucy’s beloved Stroboscopic Artefacts label is long overdue. The music draws on much of the British producer’s previous work, assembled carefully using a characteristic sonic palette - but as ever, Brewer finds fresh space between sounds - showing off a tentatively more extroverted side to his work. 

Title track The Light Touch is perhaps one of Shifted’s more idiosyncratic pieces. Instantly recognisable with it’s heavily granular finish and subtle shifts in delay and reverb composition, the track is rich with groove and moves relentlessly across it’s five minute run time. 

Seel showcases the artist’s talent for building tension with minimal elements - built around a single warping lead, noise tracks drift in and out of the mix to generate effective builds and subtle releases. EP closer, Mixen, riffs on it’s predecessor’s approach but strips back the percussive elements further and ups the ante with searing drone signals rising up above the lead sequence driving the track.

As ever, Brewer’s musical output looks to the heart of the genre - remaining true to purist sensibilities that favour economy of sonic components and studio prowess over unnecessary fanfare, but all the while forging new ground & refining a genuinely personal aesthetic. A powerful debut on a label in fine form that represents some of the best of the British artist’s work.

Having been producing and performing since 2010, Uun has been a staple of the techno scene for many years. His mind melting live performance have been featured at many institutions, including Movement Festival in Detroit, Tresor in Berlin, Khidi in Tbilisi, and Basement in NYC. Resident Advisor referred to this ability to work within many different imprints and styles as “quietly infiltrating techno”, and compared his music to the latter days of the Sandwell District.

He is perhaps best known as a producer, having released substantial work on some of the most respected underground techno labels, including Mord, Semantica, and Soma. The genre defining record store Hard Wax described Uun's sound as a "straight ahead techno juggernaut." He also has his own label titled Ego Death, where he releases his most genre defying material.
