The aim of this podcast is to explore the notion of research-informed teaching in higher education, both from a practical and theoretical point of view.  The episodes bring together a range of academics and graduates to discuss what research-informed teaching means to them, why they think it is important and how we can truly bring research and teaching together so that they are mutually beneficial rather than in tension.
The podcast is brought together by Professor Catherine Hobbs, Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Environment and Technology, UWE Bristol, and Dr Petia Petrova, Associate Director of Academic Practice at UWE Bristol, who provide brief reflections on each episode to introduce them.

The role of the final year dissertation. 

Emma Weitkamp discusses with her guest Dr Emmanuel Adukwu, Senior Lecturer in Applied Sciences and Brodie Walker, a recent graduate who now works as a senior epidemiologist for Public Health England, their thoughts on how the final year dissertation can be a vital development tool for students. Through finding out what the student’s needs are, the supervisor and student can work together to ensure that the dissertation supplies skills and experience that move the student towards their goal.

How can we embed research in our teaching? 

Catherine Hobbs and guests, Dr Maria Casado-Diaz and Professor Rachel Sara discuss this topic from their own subject perspectives.  Catherine is a mathematician, Maria an expert in tourism studies and Rachel an architect.  They explore the ‘standard approach’ of using research expertise to inform the curriculum but go on to look at deeper ways of involving students in research

Episode 3: What is a University?  

Petia discusses with guests Professor Matthew Morgan and Professor Joanne Reeves, who are both medical educators at the Hull-York Medical School, why research and teaching are inextricably linked for them.  They touch on Problem-Based Learning and on assessment, and how these can potentially hide uncertainty in existing knowledge and the necessity of research.

Jeanette discusses with guests Myra Evans and Maryam Bham the value of teaching research skills to students.  Myra is Academic Director for Inclusive and Practice-Oriented Curriculum in ACE and Maryam is a recent graduate who is now working in teaching at primary level.
