"The Cold war is over, or is it? During communism times pre 1990, for Bulgaria contact with the West was very limited. Obviously, the internet was only a theoretical concept so everything we knew about the world came through our TV and radio boxes at home and the two state television programs.

The generation that came to age in the decades between the 70s and the 90s would associate certain melodies which were borrowed (it is not clear whether that was through the proper licensing channels, likely not the case) by the Bulgarian TV studio for some very popular programs such as daily information bulletin, weekly Sunday talk shows Jay Leno style (and era), lottery draws, weekend morning tv shows. For example, the intro of Pink Floyd’s ‘Time’ would forever be stuck in our minds as the melody for trivia quiz show ‘A minute is a lot’ which aired Saturdays at around noon time. As one can imagine these tracks bring a certain feeling of domestic coziness of the living room from the pre Iron Curtain fall for the generations that lived with them.

Similarly, there was quite a bit of cultural borrowing (official, or otherwise) from western pop culture and there are a number of songs which are known to Bulgarians of this generation with a version made by Bulgarian artists and production studios." Valentin Doychinov, aka V-Stok

Usually experimenting with abstract rhythmic structures, mellow atmospheres, guitar and synth textures, Bulgarian-born producer V-stók has been taming electronic sounds in the London scene for quite a few years now. His passion for longer and more free-form audio explorations has finally brought him to Amek Collective. 

From the fragile ambient soundcapes of 'Omne Vivum Ex Vivo' to the Berlin School-influenced hypnotic sequences of 'This Life' or the raw noise in 'Golden Carnivore', 'Primordial Soup' is a recording that drifts into a plethora of genres. The sound is constantly morphing but never losing focus.

Food Chain

One last mix to end the year. When Svreca sent me this set, he could not have known what it would mean to me. I have spent so much time looking back lately, reliving old discussions and re-imagining moments passed, often lamenting how much was lost along the way. In just under three hours this mix communicates the flow of years. An archived recording from a special memory, it reminds me that the passage of time is beautiful even in what it fades away. Listening to it, I become lost completely, as though I am everywhere at once.

Thank you to everyone who listened this year, who sent warm messages and left comments, who supported us and kept us feeling connected. Thank you to the artists who continue to give their time and trust to the podcast and label, and keep us moving forward.
