Emanating from Bristol’s bubbling underground, emerging artist variable_self debuts on Remmah, incorporating a wide-eyed three tracker to Hammer’s ever-reliable label family. Forging a progressive approach to acid-tinged hardware and analogue sounds, each of the trilogy of tracks on the Stone Jam EP is a synapse-firing delight, bridging past and future with rare ease.

Title track ‘Stone Jam’ is itself a weighty introduction to these playful studies of rave and club culture, a glorious and tuneful collage that nudges a crossfader between pulsating deep chords, neon hip-house, and deeply felt 808 pleasure. ‘Prism State’ tightens things up further, offering the invitation to trip with abandon on some of the cleanest electro this side of your local windfarm, guided by cascading human chords, blissed out in the mix.

Concluding the release, ‘Repetition 94’ offers up a warehouse-sized treat for the purest ravers. Riding on a serious bassline and defined by joyous piano keys, it flirts playfully with the sonic signifiers that have kept the club scene bubbling for decades. From the South West to the world, variable_self looks backward only to push forward.

He sat upon a little hill beside the bridge and looked out upon the river which passed down beneath. It was hard to see the ripples of the water but for the occasional flicker of the headlights which whizzed by up there on the overpass. Some people came out here from time to time to spot the northern lights but there wasn't much moving in the wayward sky this evening. 

There was a near silence in the air, the occasional scream of something wild in the woods in the distance would echo across the snow capped fields. 

He took a deep breath and watched as it filled the air with fog.

Don't Be Afraid has always represented the very best of the underground, a prominent label with a commitment to the out there. Label boss makes a triumphant return with a new EP.

"When you go to your stereo and turn on the tunes and all is working well with the speaker wire, then the sound is sweet, crisp and clear. You hear what the artist and producer intended for you to hear — and it’s a good and pleasant thing. 

However, if your speaker wire has a short in it, if it’s frazzled by a fray, then things might not go so well, and a clear connection could be lost. 

There are moments when that frayed wire may be in the perfectly placed position to still allow really solid sound to pass through. In that moment, the music is coming through loud and clear and you get to enjoy the groove. 

But then something shifts — even just a little, and suddenly that worn wire produces static (and maybe even sparks). The music’s still there, but with it is another competing noise — a sharp and crepitating noise — a noise that’s taken something pleasant and made it painful. 

All of a sudden something shifts again, and everything has gone from simple static to overwhelming and excruciating white noise. In the chaotic cacophony you find yourself reaching for the volume control in order to mute the mess because it hurts. 

Then things shift once more and the frayed wire is now in a position where nothing’s getting through. The connection has been lost and all is silent. The stereo itself is still making a melody, but that melody is trapped inside the machine and unknown to anyone on the outside."
