Third Thoughts

I listen to all genres of music from all time periods. Every once in a while, the elements braid together and create something nearly indescribable and surprising where I am merely a passenger in their car. It feels like magic.

Keyholes

I created this song for my son on the event of his thirteenth birthday. I attempted meeting him where he is, acknowledging where he’s been and nodding to so many changes ahead. I am playing with contrasts. I wanted to include elements of songs from other artists which he shares with me, yet holding my own style.

The first half and the second half of the song are different in terms of quantization. While the core pocket is on the mark, several other elements are unquantized, making their component flitter off-beat and disjointed. The metaphor for this is the newness of being a kid and discovering things. It’s awkward but it is your normal: unpracticed and inexact. The change in beat represents rolling up your sleeves, making plans, and building structure of your life. The solo’s first long notes imply caution or fear, but give way to the celebratory and frenetic energy of discovery and exhilaration in finding what the world has to offer. Finally we return to a similar feel as in the beginning, but now all the tracks are quantized and tight, communicating the foundation of self, but now with more command and decisiveness. The end drifts off slowly, not representing an ending, but more like a natural rest before searching for the next challenge.

Oh, and a little trivia about this track is the duration is 5:53, which if you add the numbers together you get 13 !
