Thoughts about the mix

One of the ways to mix that has become quite popular over the years is through harmonic mixing. Essentially,  a mixing process through music theory principles.  Understanding that certain keys work with others, and many software that complements DJ equipment have this feature built-in. 

For beginners who don't have a background in playing a musical instrument, this is a similar process and one I'd recommend. But don't overwhelm yourself at the start. Have fun DJ-ing and introduce these principles gradually into your mixing. And in your spare time, pick up an instrument and just play around with it. Do you notice that certain chords work with others, while some don't? Ask yourselves "Why is that?" and look at the principles in harmonic mixing - do you see any similarities?

Mashing genres together takes time, and I'd say it's a relatively advanced skill to execute correctly. A great place to start is through harmonic mixing, but to truly do it right look at your deck as a musical instrument, not as equipment. This mental shift allows you to approach mixing like you're playing an instrument. Imagine wanting to mash up musical genres in your piece, how would you approach it? And go from there. 

Harmonic mixing isn't fun at the start, but one important skill that is developed through this process is ear training. You'll be able to pick out the right songs automatically and won't have to rely on any charts or software. Yes, the software can tell us which harmonic system it's in but it's still up to you to mix and create a mashup that'll take us on a journey but a playlist.
