We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him

Some songs are more personal than others. 

This one began with me soloing on my guitar. For some reason, what I was playing registered with the same emotion I felt when I learned my dad was going to prison. So, I created a song around that soloing and story. 

But what I felt in relation to my own biography has been recreated millions of times across this country. After all, we don’t call it _mass_ incarceration for nothing. 

Song songs that are deeply personal turn out to be deeply collective as well.
