Coming from a family of artists and musicians, DeCastro was inspired early to study performing arts and music. Valeria has been singing Bossa and Samba since she was 15 when she began her guitar studies with Mestre Gamela - one of the most important brazilian guitar Bossa Nova player in contemporary Brazil . At age 17, Valeria won her first prize as a music composer in Brazil.
 
Living in the Unite States since 1993, Valeria built her reputation as a composer, musician and vocalist performing solo and as leader of the group ABACAXI, playing opposite jazz and blues saxophonist Hakim Rahsul and performing with many other noted local and international musicians. She enjoys  sharing her music with other musicians, explore new musical expressions and to fusion acoustic and electronic music (what she defines as ElectrOrganic music).
 
The word "bossa" is old-fashioned slang for something that is done with particular charm, natural flair or innate ability. A lyrical fusion of samba and jazz, Bossa Nova, since its birth has remained a vital part of the standard jazz repertoire. Over the years the genre of bossa nova has reached beyond its Brazilian and jazz roots, influencing popular music and other popular rhythms.  Valeria's blend of Bossa Nova and Jazz explores the deep roots of music from the Americas and reminds us just how much the two genres influenced each other.
DeCastro has performed in several countries for over 30 years including Brazil, Italy, Spain and Costa Rica.
