Danish duo Laid Back made a most surprising comeback to the clubs in 2010 with
Cocaine cool". Not that they had ever been really forgotten: Their electro pop
classic white horse remained a sure shot in clubs for the thirty years after
its release 30 years back and a constant inspiration to boatload of diverse
artists from techno to hip-hop. cocaine cool was recorded at the same session
but the ironic vocals ridiculing label executives blowing up their frail ego
with the chemical substance were deemed to risquee at that time, so the
recording collected dust in some box until last year. Bostons Soul Clap
another duo hailed as one of the hotest things in clubland known for their
eclectic funk-rooted taste. They opt for a cool sparser arrangement leaving out
the white horse"-like chords. A loose, dry electro funk beat, hpynotic one-note
synth, few dub effects and additional vocoder vocals do the trick bravorously.
Besides an instrumental version theres also a harder jacking dub take sounding
like early chicago house edits. And while the boys are add it they also
re-edited another huge one from Laid Back: baker man that managed the unlikely
balancing act of not only hitting it bigtime in the charts but also in the
emerging balearic scene.

Soul Clap’s mixes have become the stuff of legend amongst house heads in the know over the past few years - hence our excitement at them being revealed as the latest act to step up to deliver a Watergate mix - but their releases are equally coveted by discerning fans. For their latest party trick, the boys have come up trumps once again, readying the third instalment of their Dancing On The Charles compilation series.

Having originally arrived as a limited run of cassette tapes, 'D.O.T.C. Vol 3’ now lands digitally and features some of Boston’s most celebrated producers, with a mix of returning veterans and emerging artists contributing fresh cuts to represent their city.

Comprised of 10 tracks from friends both new and old, D.O.T.C. Vol 3 offers up names such as DT favourites John Barera and Jack Novin, Lee Wilson and  naturally label bosses Soul Clap themselves.

Our Debut Transmission today however comes from Boston's "Queen of the Underground" D-Lux. A long term fixture within the city's vibrant electronic music scene, 'Is It You' may be her finest work yet, channelling the sounds of the past for a funk laden slice of retrofitted disco with songstress Saucy Lady on vocals and D.O.T.C. alumni / FSQ member Chas Bronz on bass.

Daft Punk - Beyond Nicolas Jaar  Dave Harrington Remix

Released in 1975 as part of JorgeBen & GilbertoGil duo album "Jorge & Gil", this song evokes the legendary Carnaval bloco from Salvador de Bahia, the "Filhos De Gandhy", whose history is a great snapshot of Brazil social and cultural roots.

In 1951, following authoritarian Brazilian authorities challenge of some important social welfare benefiting Bahia's port workers, a group of the city's dockers led the opposition, chosing Mahatma Gandhi's famous non-violent approach. 
Unfolding during carnival time, their demonstrations were met with a large popular success, so much that they decided to cement their group through a cultural and spiritual association: a carnival bloco. The "Filhos De Gandhy" (with an "y", I don't know why), were born.  

Today it's one of the oldest and largest blocos in the country with more than 10 000 members. Their white outfit and turban is easily recognizable, and the legend says it gives men wearing it a certain sex-appeal with women :) 
Bahia's strong African legacy is also very much present in the Filhos's songs and chants, often written in Nigerian Yoruba language, while also influenced by African animist religion Candoblé (also know as Afoxé).

Born in Salvador and occasionally partying with the group, Gilberto Gil wrote this 13 minutes-long song, probably as a direct tribute to the Filhos. Here is my drummed-up (and shortened) Dj-friendly edit of it.

P.S.: the photo artwork dates back from 1946/48. It was taken in Bahia by late French photographer and enthnologist Pierre Verger, who dedicated his life studying the links between West Africa and Brasil, notably the Candomblé religion. His work as a photographer is simply stunning, I urge you to google it if you enjoy photo as an art, and Brasil & its people in particular.

Musically you can expect a mix of deep Indietronic tinged with solid 80's basses and techy House, spiced up with a hefty pinch of funk and soul.
