I usually prefer happy songs, but I really fell in love with those sad songs from the early Tales Of games as well.
Tales of Destiny is my favourite Tales Of OST in general, closely followed by Tales of Phantasia.

It's so sad. It's so beautiful. It brings back memories of playing ToP. You can hear the characters' lamentations while listening to the song.

This is based on the superior SFC version. The PSX version, although nice as well, lacks detuned echoes and vibrato. Especially the absence of the latter makes the PSX version a tiny bit less sad than the SFC version.

I think I like the song mainly because of the drums. The cymbals especially. And the beginning is neat.

Why did I make a VGM of this song? I really don't remember. But it was the test case for mid2vgm RF5Cxx. The tool never left the alpha state though.

I made 3 MIDIs: two for each of the YM2612 chips and one for RF5C68 drums. I converted each into a separate VGM and merged them using vgmmerge.
So what you hear is 2xYM2612 + 1xRF5C68, which happens to be the configuration present in Sega System 32 arcades.

I tried to recreate that weird synth sound at plays a 5th in FM so that it uses only 1 channel. (2x2op makes it possible)
The choice of the original instrument is questionable though, since the song itself sometimes plays a 5th in notes, making a 5th on top of a 5th.

Ahh, what a wonderful song. And the MIDI I used to make this version sounds very nice as well. It's a sequence by King Meteor, who does a great job.
This song was requested by Tamkis. Yes, it's the guy that inspired me to write mid2smps. I think his music choices are actually pretty good.
It doesn't look like he ever released the hack these songs were made for though.

A nice and calm song. The melody echo on the PSG chip gives it a nice touch. Just the PSG harmony sounds a bit bland.

This is a funky song that I ported by the request of Psycho RFG.
It's one of the few SMPS ports I did that don't use the PSG. The song really doesn't need it though.
Psycho RFG prefers simpler ports anyway, because that way less channels that are cut off by SFX.
