Explore "Woman on a Bridge #1 of 5: Tar Beach (1988)", one of the most important works by Faith Ringgold, a renowned artist, writer, and activist. This monumental quilt, the first in a series of five, tells the story of a young girl who dreams of flying from her Harlem rooftop to celebrate her own freedom and self-possession.

This exhibition dives into Ringgold’s artistic influences and the lasting impact she has had on later generations of artists. Alongside Tar Beach, visitors will see works from the Guggenheim New York collection by European modernists such as Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso, who inspired Ringgold, and contemporary American artists such as Tschabalala Self and Sanford Biggers, whose work reflects her legacy.

The Reach of Faith Ringgold is organized by Naomi Beckwith, Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator, with support from Saria AlMidani, Assistant to Chief Curator. It is the third exhibition in the series Collection in Focus.

"Woman on a Bridge #1 of 5: Tar Beach"

Gabriele Münter’s international journeys heightened her visual acuity and, in 1908, precipitated what she later described as a “great leap forward” in her artistic language. That summer, fresh from traveling extensively in Tunisia and Europe, including more than a year in Paris, Münter returned to her native Germany. She soon encountered the market village of Murnau am Staffelsee, in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps and about an hour by train from Munich. She painted side-by-side with Alexei Jawlensky, Vasily Kandinsky, and Marianne Werefkin. The following year, Münter purchased a modest house that became a critical site of gathering and exchange for her artistic circles in and around Murnau and Munich. 

Her early landscapes display bold colors and simplified forms. She carried her easel or small supports outdoors and observed shifting light and weather at different times of day. An avid cyclist, Münter embraced a pursuit that afforded women greater freedom of movement and introduced her to new perspectives on shifting vistas. The artist also hiked and gardened—activities aligned with the German Lebensreform (life reform) movement, which promoted the restorative benefits of returning to the land in response to rapid urban industrialization.  

Murnau again provided a source of creativity, and solace, during the final three decades of Münter’s life, when it became her primary residence once more. She later recalled, “Nowhere had I seen such an abundance of fine views all in the one place as here in Murnau, between lake and highlands, between rolling hills and moor.”
