Deep Site Sessions Radio Show Episode 14 With Rory Cochrane & Portofino Sunrise

We have Uncanny Valley heavyweight, Cuthead, up for our next podcast. Flux have somewhat of an affinity with the Dresden label having had various artists of the label as guests including Robert who has actually played for us twice, once in Leeds and once in London.

Cuthead is the Hip-Hop cat of the Uncanny Valley artists. His crew Kunst:stoff Breakz, is highly renowned in Dresden for wild parties at various locations involving altercations with local authorities, had initially strictly been a Hip Hop posse. Although he never moved away from Hip-Hop completely his beats have become straighter and his sounds more electronic.

Robert took part in the Red Bull Academy in Barcelona in 2008 and produces a real array of music such as Wonky, Dub, Dubstep, Techno, House and IDM/ Electronica – all of which can be heard on his albums ‘Murdoc’ and ‘City Slicker’. In winter 2013 “Everlasting Sunday” saw the light of day, an EP with room for his two musical love affairs. There is a side with House music while the flipside is just for Hip Hop. These and many other releases have helped underline his status as one of the slickest producers of House music at this moment in time.

The whole idea of Big Imagination just got my attention from the minute I heard about it. I was completely in love with the project! Are these folks crazy that they are really bringing a Boeing 747 to the Playa? Are those 3 T-rex dancing on the plane? Unbelievable.

Leaving your emotional baggage behind and going through the insecurity checkpoint brings you into a special headspace physically and mentally. After the connection with the crew and receiving the most comfortable hug you realize you are ready for the journey.

Me and Cris44 were playing right after an amazing piano concert that spontaneously popped up in the plane. This was kind of the perfect take off for the night. When I took the cockpit the cruise speed and altitude was just perfect. And I let myself go... As simple as soundtracking a journey to a Burner´s dreams. A great experience that will live inside me forever.

Thierry Tomas Pusher 

Already with a significant release history on labels such as Get Physical, Russian born Thierry Tomas (Evgeniy Nikolaev) is welcomed to Dessous for this  fierce EP. Tomas’s heart clearly lies with classic US deep house, and this lineage is present in his own productions, along with a strong dose of his own signature strain of house music.

'Pusher' is a groove-laden burner with a crisp, jazzy feel that taps into the classic new york vibe, but has the restraints not to become a pastiche. The playful vocals add to the fun.

'Piu Piu' also has that certain swing - a laid back groove that has enough punch to move any floor, but also gives the listener room to think.

'Doo Doo' brings a chugging groove to the fore, augmented with understated but incredibly funky congas. The cheeky vocals again show the lighter side of Tomas’s approach - there’s a sense of fun and humour in his productions that can often be missing from house and techno.

Closing out the release, 'Easy' is a deep bomb, somehow tipping its hat to the house explorations of Pepe Bradock or Mike Huckaby. Vocal samples provide some of the percussive heat, while low pads and crisply programmed drums bring plenty of vibe. Definitely a talent that should be watched in the coming months.
