Thick branches and huge leaves blocked their path through the rainforest; a maze of nature that felt untouched by human hands. Their expedition had led them into the depths and along the waters edge until they found themselves in lower forest, where their historic studies would begin. Much had been passed on about the chiefdoms and agricultural work that had once taken place here ions ago, but they hoped to uncover more about the history of these fertile grounds and the communities who'd once called it home.

Manchester party and label Left, Right & Centre have built a fearsome reputation over the last year with their expertly curated VAs that swirl confidently around the sounds of UK techno, jungle and breaks. Now, for the first time, they're releasing a solo artist EP headed up by label co-founder Korzi. The three tracks on 'Terra Preta' signal a new direction for the producer —who's previously released outings for Move, Tommy Club/Playtest, Sound Freq and Footslog— instead exploring low slung rhythms around the 100 BPM mark.

For the next addition of our mix series, we're super excited to welcome London based DJ, Niceup. Having recently supported the likes of Interplanetary Criminal and Eich, alongside a number of gigs at London's famous venues, Niceup has been able to carry his love for the UK sound and establish himself as a mainstay within the scene. Throughout his radio shows he has also made a consistent effort to showcase the finest in UK talent, inviting versatile DJs on for incredible guest mixes. In this mix, Niceup opens with wobbly, percussive UK Garage, weaving it intricately with breaks, electro and 140 as it steadily progresses. Over the hour there is a seamless journey through his insane catalog of tunes with expert transitions tying it all together.

For our first installment of the Vandelay guest mix of 2019, we finally got Aloka. When we first started Vandelay we wanted to showcase local Welsh talent before anything else. Aloka has been at the forefront of our radar even before the inception of Vandelay, his debut release K1/K2 a sure dancefloor weapon. With music supported by the likes of DJ Seinfeld, and the inception of his new labels, Aloka is a true representation of a new sound, a new generation.

This mix is a reflection of that, Aloka dipping and weaving between genres but still providing beats for you to get down to. Proper stuff.

Slowly and carefully, he heaved himself off the ground limb by limb, panting heavily as he swayed onto his feet. Straightening up, he looked them square in the eye. Disbelief and fear spread across the faces of these perpetrators. They didn't think they'd have this much of a fight on their hands. It didn't matter how hard their punches or how vicious their insults; nothing would keep him down...

After contributions to Volume 2 and 3 of their Of Paradise compilation series, the label of the same name have invited Nuremberg-based producer Lazarus back for his first full solo outing on the imprint. Downwards is a ride through futuristic techno and breakbeat; maneouvering from deep rhythms and stabs of percussion to bright melodies and ferocious drum patterns, with each track showcasing Lazurus' knack for texture, expanse and emotion.

The final episode of Exit Planet Earth Series 2 on OpenLab is a special extended music only mix that takes in some of my favourite records produced in 2020AD. It’s not intended to be a ‘Best of 2020’ but more a selection of the records that resonated thru the year for me personally. There are many more that could have been included.
