Vandera Mix 12: Live at Liquicity

"Mixtape 13 marks the full completion of a year since we started the mixtapes back in May 2010, and we’ve got something a little bit special to say the very least. Introducing Vandera…

Not a common name on the London Dubstep scene, Vandera plays things quiet and comes out with pieces of magic like this mixtape. When I first heard of the concept behind this 60 minute mix, I knew that it had to become part of the series. Here’s how it works – 60 minutes, 60 tracks, 1 key; C-Minor. It’s a brave thing to try and pull off, but damn does it sound good.

With unreleased bits from the likes of DFRNT, Numan, Lung, Artifact and of course Vandera himself, the mix has a decent selection of little treats in it. But, to be completely honest, this mix is not really about the dubs, in fact I’d go as far as saying it wasn’t even about the tracklist, it’s about a 60 minute long tune of epic proportions. With a crazy out-of-the-box approaches to studio mixes like this, it’s no wonder that Vandera found himself nominated for Dubstepforum’s Best Mix/Podcast 2011 award alongside the likes of Burial x Kode9, Digital Mystikz, Ramdanman and Addison Groove. A pretty impressive achievement.

Next up on their Future Sound series, Hospital delve deep into the Netherlands regions. No mean feat; Holland is biting hard on the heels of the UK in terms of diversity, range and pure skill. So much so you could fill several albums with Dutch D&B and still not get bored. Rather than focus on the obvious (Noisia, Maduk, Icicle, Black Sun Empire) they've dug deeper for dark tech halftime hurtery (Proxima and Posij), pure hands-in-the-air euphoria (T & Sugah and NCT) spine-tingling sci-fi soul (Vandera remix of Tom Middleton's 2013 Anjundeep classic) and molten mechanic tech rollers (Arch Origin) Each cut perfectly chiselled, this is a great window into Holland's rich D&B bounty.

Deepstep .01 LP is an album on the Dutch label Scientific Records that’s made by 9 established drum & producers trying their hand at non-d’n’b excursions including dubstep, downtempo, breaks, and other non-170-BPM areas. So, what to expect? Basically, the same quality of production, but at a different rate of beats per minute. The compilation is an interesting cross-section of different approaches to the deeper side of electronic music, infused with a lot of producer-specific spices, such as Mav’s characteristic sci-fi samplework on 140-BPMed “Endless Nights”, Naibu’s typical ‘gentle’ chopped-up beats on his house-paced “Description”, Bop’s trademark clicks on the dubsteppish “Twilight”, or Tiiu’s mesmerizing dark soundscapes presented on “Madness”. And with further appearances of the likes of Seathasky, Vandera, Actraiser, Barefoot, and Eissi, all of which deliver another portion of superb music ranging from deep dubstep to uplifting breaks, you just know the album is a real treat. Especially to those into home listening. But Scientifc makes it a tasty morsel for all the wax-heads out there, as it will come not only in digital form, but also on vinyl.

Vandera Mix 06 in E♭ Minor: 60 tracks in 60 minutes

Vandera is a scientist by day -developing new pharmacological compounds- and a music producer by night. His melodically rich sounds are easily administered intra-aurally at home, with certain wave forms specifically engineered to spark billions of neurons in clubs and festivals. Vandera's other, more laidback product line of chilled out sounds is designed for afterparties or autonomic use. Both varieties from Amsterdam’s psychonaut Vandera have been featured on BBC Radio1, UKF and Liquicity and are released on record labels such as Hospital, Good Looking and Liquicity. 

Of particular depth and fluidity are Vandera's key-matched mixes - hybrids  between music mixing and production - which have been nominated for awards and won him the Deep Heads mix competition.

Vandera's live DJ performances have reached clubs and festivals all over the world with regular appearances at LTJ Bukem's night at Fabric London since 2013.
